  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Just made a 120 mile round trip for nothing.

Got a call from a salesman. He said he had just got a shipment of V8s last night and has a Black/Saddle with the tech package. Thought I questioned him enough sounded for real. I asked how much the window sticker was. He said $42,000.

Blew off some pretty important stuff, drove up there. They have 3 six cylinders. I asked the salesman why he thought they were V8s. He said that the cars were 3.8s, thinking the 8 was the number of cylinders. He told me that they don't have any 6 cyl (4.6s). He thought saddle was the beige.

When I asked him on the phone how does he know that they are the V8s. He said they say 8 cylinder everywhere. Should have questioned it further. Everywhere doesn't include the window sticker or under the hood, I guess.

Now I understand the 3 day waiting period for handguns. Just kidding.

Sorry about the rant. Just really torqed off!!!

That's horrible. That sucks you drove all that way for nothing. Hopefully you'll be able to look back and laugh at it. It really is shocking how little most car salesman know about cars. I can't even recall all the BS I've been fed over the years. Recently though, I had a Subaru salesman tell me the car used a Porsche engine. When I told him they use Boxer engines like Porsche, but the engines are not shared, he got all irritated. There's nothing worse than someone who thinks they know something and can't admit to being wrong. Hopefully you gave the saleman an "education" before you left. ;)

Nah, no education for him today. I should have questioned him more before I left. My fault not his. Just got excited. I guess most of these salesmen are on their own in the education department.

That subaru boxer motor is really durable. Makes a great General Aviation Experimental engine. Similiar design as the Lycoming and Contential. That is more impressive than it being a porche design (incorrectly).

Did get to listen to some seminar CDs on the way up and back, I've been putting off.

First time I've seen the beige interior in the Genesis. Did get to test drive again. Some positives.

Forgot a DVD though I was going to test the player and info center screen.

Three Words: Bait And Switch.

Nah, just an honest mistake. Salesman apologized. You don't know what you don't know. I should have questioned him more. Not likely someone would get 3 V8s. This one was my own fault.

The real shame here is a car salesman not knowing what 3.8 and 4.6 means.

Yeah, he should have looked at a brochure, at least. Maybe not an inquistive individual. He would have also known that saddle isn't beige(cashmere).

I forgot a funny part. He has a sign on his desk that says "It's not Brain Surgery, heck, It's not even Pinky Surgery". Maybe it is pinky surgery, almost.

Actually he is a pretty good guy. I should have known nobody would get 3 V8s in and no 6 cyl. Those darn brain farts, I guess.

We all get wrapped up in the excitement. I told myself that I would not buy anything but a Black / black V8 Tech. Yesterday I almost gave in and bought a silver / black V6 Tech.

Fortunately, my wife was there to do what she does best.....bring me back to earth.

In my opinion, there is a significant difference in the V8 and V6. I will wait for the V8.

It is so sad that an educated consumer knows more than 99% of the car salesmen that latch on to you when you pull into the parking lot.

If you and I can learn about the features of a car we are interested in on the Internet wouldn't you think if it was your occupation you would know more about the product than someone coming off the street?

This is what has me completely and entirely shocked! I SPEND over a thousand dollars per week - so I'm LOSING money - and I know more about the Genesis than a "Genesis" salesman who just got out of training and is being PAID - EARNING money... It's mind boggling...

I work with new home builders and their marketing departments. We spend a lot of time trying to educated the sales consultants. One of the things we try to impress upon them is that when a prospect walks through their model home it is a test. Due of the availability of information, most people know just about everything there is to know about the schools, community, city, neighborhood, etc. At this point a successful transaction is based on how the sales consultant conducts themselves. If they start spewing crap in an effort to impress the prospect the deal is over. When a prospect walks through the door, they are testing the sales people. Because they know so much before visiting the home, they know immediately if the salesperson is an idiot.

I realize there is a significant difference in price from a house to a car and the homework involved is a little less intense. I truly believe we are not too far away from the day when car shoppers are as knowledgeable as the people on this forum.

Genesis aside, I'm a bit suprised also hearing these stories and having experienced it myself, that sales people should know more about their cars then the people who are coming in to see them, isn't it their occupation?

I suppose it falls from top down, if management doesn't provide the training, courses, time, etc., then they won't be inclined to learn. Why learn at work when you're pushed to sale? Or, learn at home when there's no incentive to try harder?

It's possible the saleperson could have been playing dumb just to get you in.

I went to look at 09 Sonatas, asked if cocoa metallic exterior was onsite, and sales manager insisted it wasn't a Hyundai/Sonata color, even tellin me he looked at the website. I was a little peeved, straight up lie or he was just clueless.

I hate when they insist they are right, and you know they are not, and they try to pull that sales shit on you, to try to get you tunnel vision, and you just have to call them on it. I'm still shoppping, if I was really serious I suppose I could have pressed the topic.

Amazing. This is truly a sad story. However, I have to admit that it made me laugh out loud. I know you're probably not in the mood to think it's funny, but hopefully telling it online will help you blow off some steam and also maybe someday you'll be able to laugh at it too while you recall the incredible story about this idiot sales guy.

I think this will be a problem across dealerships. A big one in my opinion. The salesmen need to know the car inside out. Every detail every option about the car he/she should know before making the sale to the customer. Especially if Hyundai is trying to compete with other luxury brands. I know there are idiot salesmen everywhere, even bmw/benz/lexus has a few. Ive had first hand experiences with salesmen who were complete idiots when it came to technical specs. Since this is Hyundai's first car to compete against other luxury cars the salesmen should def know what they are selling. Maybe Hyundai forgot to emphasize this to the dealers? I dont konw but I hope the salesmen start learning about the car real fast.

When I went to take a test drive I asked if i could see under the hood and he said yes. I asked if i could see under the engine cover he said he has to ask his manager. WTh? I told him its just a plastic cover that goes over it wont break, and if it does ill buy it right now. He says are you sure? So i went ahead and moved it with no problem and saw the engine and put the cover back on.

Even instances like that, the salesmen he/she should know this.

I bet he knows how much he makes if he sells the car!

It's just a matter of professionalism. Some people have careers and some people have jobs. There is a distinct difference.

I also believe the sales people need to know more about the car(s) they're selling. Especially if you're the "Genesis guy", like the one I spoke with - who didn't know how to spell Genesis. How do these people think it makes a customer feel when they have so little interest in the products they're trying to sell you?
