  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hi, I was wondering if it were possible to take advantage of the built-in front camera by recording its view. Could be useful in case of accidents. With this mass invasion of the UK by Europe and other countries, we have a new phenomenon to endure. Unscrupulous types fake accidents by reversing into your car and them claiming you hit them, so they can claim whiplash compensation. It's d so bad, our so called government are talking about it. A recording would prove what really happens.

cheers
Nick

I think people in Russia use dash cams for that same problem you are referring to

Are you saying that all those foreign drivers are way worse drivers than we are? :D

Edit:

Never mind.....I think that OP lives in UK.

I would hesitate to fiddle with the built in camera since it is used for emergency braking, lane assist, etc. It also may not provide an image recognizable by humans.

While likely not easily accessible for recording, the non-US market he has does have cameras in front, rear and on the side mirrors which provide the 360 degree parking view we dod not get here.

^ Unrelated to topic, but ksoze, everytime I see your name I think of that movie Usual Suspects and that part when one of the victims from the opening scene wakes up and starts repeatedly yelling "Kaiser Soze, Kaiser Soze!" Great movie.

OK, back on topic. Sorry.

That's exactly where the username I use is from...;)

Hi, I think the 4 cameras allow for Smart Parking Assist, where the car parks itself? Do you not have Smart Parking Assist in the USA?

cheers

No, don't rub it in. The cameras are used to create the overhead effect for the surround view parking feature. The self-parking feature would also use sensors to determine distance.

Here in the USA we only go to malls, where the prices are high and the parking is easy... :)

Sounds dull. Where's the 'challenge factor' and the satisfaction of not hitting anything? :)

Yeah, this thing gives a birds-eye view so you can watch yourself parking, like the camera is in a drone, 30' above the car. How do they do that?

I'm now on countdown, I get the car in 3 days time and getting very excited.

There are four cameras - one front and rear as well as one at each side mirror. By "stitching" those images together, the display can create a virtual birds eye view. Some find it helpful, some find it visually overloading when trying to park.

Now that would be a really high-end option: have the car actually launch and retrieve a mini-drone to guide you with a true aerial view when you need to parallel park. None of that distorted, stitched camera view - a real bird's eye view ;)
