  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I'm seeking advice. I hit a curb and destroyed the sidewall of one of the Hankook tires on my 2015 Genesis 5.0.

I know Hyundai will replace all four tires whenever I want them.

Meanwhile, that Hankook tire is no longer being sold by anyone.

So here are my choices: Spend about $300 and replace the Hankook tire with some other brand (say, Bridgestone) and get another30-40K miles out of the set, or go ahead and get Hyundai to put on the new Continental tires? BTW, I plan to keep the car for awhile so I'll wear out the Hyundais or the Continentals and have to replace the set eventually. But if I get 35-40K miles out of the set that's on it (with one mismatched tire) I'll probably never have to buy tires for the car because I'll get an equal number of miles on the Continentals.

What say you?

Driving on a mismatched tires? I say - NO.

Don't be cheap, go to the dealer and get a "free" replacement of four tires.

Thanks. That's the direction I was leaning. The idea of mismatched tires is troubling. Guess I needed somebody to talk a little sense to me.

Also, the core issue for replacing the Hankook's with Conti's -- they are better tires.

I had the job done - the Conti's are quieter and smoother riding.

FWIW, the same thing happened to me about 4-5 weeks ago. Tore up a little bit of the sidewall and scraped the rim. I was so mad! I also debated and researched just changing that one tire or getting the 4 new ones from the dealer. Made an appt with the dealer and when they saw it, they checked it out and said don't worry about it. The Hankooks are reinforced steel on the sidewalls and it will be ok. They ordered the replacements for me anyway (which have yet to arrive), but in the meantime I've been driving with it like that and everything's ok. It hasn't lost any more PSI than the other 3, and I've been on a couple of road trips with it since then.

I had a similar situation about a month ago. I ran over a nail that was to close to the sidewall to repair. So I had to replace one of the Hankook's. Fortunately my local tire store was able to get a replacement Hankook thru Tire Rack for $300. I have the 3.8 AWD though and not the 5.0 so it was probably a different size tire. Be sure to get an alignment. Mine was off on two wheel only after 4000 miles.

Another possible option is to find out where all these dealer take-off Hankooks are going and see if one might be available to replace your damaged tire.;)

The dealers have been instructed to drill holes through the tires when they remove them.
