  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

New (to me) G70 owner here. It's a 2021 sport prestige. Came with only one key fob. I would like to get another as a spare but I have read that the dealer charges over $400 for the fob and programming. I do not want to pay that price

Can buy new OEM part for less than $100 online so that's not the issue. The issue is with programming and cutting the key.

Some questions :
1) Has anyone had success in using a third party? Could be where they come to you, you go to them, or where you send in a fob to be programmed. I called one place and they wanted $275 for programming alone. With a supplied that's almost dealer price and I would still need to get it cut. WIth my last car (infiniti) I bought a bunch of used fobs on ebay and they programmed four of them for $125. Is it true that Genesis will only recognize two Fobs per VIN?

2) I've read about key cards as an alternative. Has anyone here used one? Have you had one programmed? Is it the same deal with outrageous prices?

3) How about the genesis connected service app? Can one use their phone to lock/unlock and start the car? I'm in the process of waiting for Genesis to switch ownership from the previous owner to me.

Tell me about your key experiences!

Received a package in the mail today from the dealership where I purchased my car. It was the 2nd key fob! When I asked at the dealership they told me they didn't receive a 2nd key in the trade in. Today's my lucky day I guess.

Still interested to learn about options for key programming because chances are that I will lose a key or it will go through the washing machine as a pocket stow away.

Might be worth some google searching. I know with some fords if you have 2 programmed keys you can program additional keys, up to a certain number depending on the vehicle, on your own. Usually i wanna say its up to 6 or 8 total keys. Basically you take the first programmed key and cycle the ignition a certain number of times in a certain amount of time (say 8 times in 10 seconds) then you cycle the second programmed key which enters it into programming mode then you cycle the unprogrammed key and its programmed to the vehicle. I never understood the dealership price gouging. It may take me up to 15 minutes (some vehicles you have to wait 10 minutes to gain security access, sometimes I just have to log in to prove I'm at a dealership) to program a key. Pull in vehicle, connect computer, gain security access, put unprogrammed key wherever it needs to be and click *program additional key*. Boom done. At times it takes longer waiting for the key to be sent to me from parts dept. than it does to program it. Seems a bit wrong to charge an hour labor for that but thats what we charge. With labor rates closing in on 200 an hour i dunno how people can afford it. There are mobile locksmiths that can cut and program keys. Trust me I have seen them in our parking lot making keys for customers. Not sure how that flies but ive seen it many times. Just have to call around and ask if they can and their pricing. Good Luck dont wash your keys!

Shira50. Sounds like one could do self-programming of keys in older Hyundai Genesis models but not on the G70 and other newer models. Also read that only two keys can be active at any given time. There's just not much on genesis key fobs out there - or at least that I could find. The big unknown is the Genesis application and Genesis connected services. I'm still waiting for them to change ownership so I can explore it. Supposedly you can remote start and unlock your car. Not sure if you can use it to start and drive away. Very surprised that my G70 does not have fob activated remote start. I have a 1960s car in the garage where one can literally hot wire it because the ignition mechanism wires are easily accessible from under the dash. Simpler times........

It's my understanding that mobile locksmiths must purchase purchased the software or licenses to be able to program fobs according to the vehicle's VIN. Since Genesis is not a super popular brand, many mobile locks smiths don't have it. I think the challenge is that they don't get enough business to justify the purchase of the Genesis SW so they pass on the cost of it to customers.

I think the dealer gouging kind of comes with the territory of having a nicer car. I guess if Genesis is selling cars between $45 and $100k, $400 for a key isn't a huge ask. I'm sure the higher end brands gouge even more.

It is up to 3 keys. As for the fee, well, access to key codes basically costs a franchised dealership. The tablet and dongle we use cost about $2500. Gotta pay for things one way or another.

When I traded in my Audi for my Genesis, I only had my one key for with me. I mailed the other one to the dealer shortly thereafter. Probably something similar.

You could do that for Ford/Lincoln/Mercury PATS keys. You can't do that for Ford/Lincoln smart keys (push button start).
This is comparing apples to oranges...

I wonder if this can be done with the Xtool D8 or D9? I'm in the same boat at you, I bought a 2021 GV80 but only came with one key. I would rather spend $800 on a tool where I can make as many keys as I want then speed $400 with the dealership per.

not sure about the g70, but for my 2018 g80 that came with only one fob used, I bought a key fob from one of those hyundai parts online sites. It didn't come with the little blank metal key, so I ordered one from the walmart site and it fits. Just waiting to have time to drive back to the state I bought it from, the service manager promised to program another key for me when I voiced my complaints about the single key fob.
