  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ive noticed that when i put my genesis into reverse i will hear a loud clunk, or a pop sound(kinda like when u put your tongue to the roof of your mouth and make the pop sound). I know many vehicles do have a reverse clunk of some type. Was just wondering if this was par for the couse with genesis or not. I have a 2010 4.6 btw

I don't recall anyone reporting on this forum about such a transmission clunk on any Genesis Sedan. Your Genesis has the German ZF transmission, which is used on several brands of cars including some BMW's. However, there were a few cases of total transmission failure, but don't recall if there was a clunk.

I would take it to the dealer immediately and have it checked out. If this has been occurring for a long time, be careful about telling them when it started, otherwise they may tell you they are not responsible because you didn't report it promptly, and that delay caused permanent damage.

Have your parking brakes checked. Its under warranty until 60k miles.

I have a very similar sound coming from my car, as well. I suspect it to be a u-joint. I've yet to take it, however I'm reasonably certain of my diagnosis.

Could be center carrier bearing of the drive shaft.

Have the same thing going on with my 2010 on an intermittent basis and the likely items are the u-joints, center carrier and possibly even front bushings. Primarily get the sound when put into reverse but once in a while it will do it when put in drive. Positive its not going to be trans related as that usually has it own unique sound as feel.
The dealer today of course couldn't replicate. Ugh!

Clunk in reverse indicates a u-joint issue when the driveshaft is reversed and the 'slack' in the joint caused noise. Same thing with any vehicle that has a U-joint.

I have a similar problem....but only when i reverse and have my wheel turned all the way to the right. When going reverse straight there is no sound at all. Did anyone have a similar problem?

I had that issue with full turn+reverse clunk on a previous car and it was resolved by greasing the stops.
