  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driving today a rock hit the windshield and cracked it about the size of a silver dollar. The rock came from a Toyota Camry going 50 mph 2 car lengths in front of me. Insurance is paying for a replacement at no cost to me. I'll believe it only if my insurance does not go up next month.

I hate it when that happens... It's just a matter of time for all of us

Got my rock (or lug nut, or ??) from oncoming traffic 2 weeks ago while driving the opposite side of the continent. Initial, foot-long crack widened to a scary 3 feet while returning home. Replacement scheduled this week.

Get that fixed as soon as possible. A friend of mine had a small crack and over night it went the length of the windshield. (I'm guessing from the fluctuation in temperature.)

Sorry that happened.

If the crack is smaller than a dollar bill it typically can be fixed. Otherwise, the windshield will be replaced. In any event, the repair or replacement should have no bearing on your insurance premium.

Lately, I am nervous if there are TOYOTAs around Genny, especially behind Genny. Is it only me that feels this way?

I had the same problem two weeks ago. I went to one of those windshield repair companies just to stop it from spreading until I can get in to get it replaced. You can still see it, but at least it's not spreading (and it looks a bit better than how it did before they applied the epoxy).

That sucks. I heard that insurance companies prefer to use non-OEM windshields as a replacement.
Make sure it's the same spec as the OEM ones.
I think the OEM shield is laminated.. I know the front side windows are, but not sure about the windshield. Last time I checked, it didn't have the icons printed on it.

Yeah I was wondering about that as well. And for the life of me I can't figure out how the rain-sensor works. I leave mine on "auto" (it's not called 'auto', but I don't remember what it's called) all the time and that damned thing will detect even a couple of drops of rain and voila, my wipers come on. I *think* it has something to do with the windshield or current or something.

I also wonder about if they will do a good job of installing it as was done during manufacture. I don't want any squeaks/rattles, etc

Actually, you can see the rain sensor attachment right next to the rear-view mirror. That's the device that sets the automatic wiper speed by sensing the number of raindrops hitting the area it covers on the windshield.

That's my primary concern with your average window replacement joint - I don't think have the expertise (yet) to ensure they replace the rain sensor properly if they replace the windshield. I've already had one decent sized rock strike fixed on my windshield and I think the next hit will probably result in total loss of the windshield. You might want to let your insurance company know about the complexity of the Genny's windshield; they might let you take to a Hyundai dealer for replacement instead.

Got my replacement installed. Still have to verify the rain sensor works, but for those who worry than an after-market replacement might not equal the original glass, here's the spec on what I got:

"Windshield Green Tint/Blue Shade (w Attch)(Rain Sensor Bracket)(Heated)(Solar)(W/Third Visor Frit)(Rain Sensor)(Acoustic Interlayer)(Heated Wiper Park Area)(Condensation Sensor)".

I didn't even know some of these items existed. Learned a new word: frit. (Still don't know what my "visor frit" does, though

Cost submitted by glass shop to insurance: $998.55, including $100 labor and tax.
