Rock vs. windshield

Today on the way into work on the freeway I took a small rock to the windshield from one of those double dirt haulers (ironically with a sign saying "rocks are not from this vehicle"). Sounded horrible, but surprisingly little damage.

Looks like a good portion of the rock disintegrated on impact, and the collateral damage was two 1/8" scratches in the laminate, no cracks or pits. Just enough to be annoying.

If not in your line of vision, just have a glass shop fill it in with the gizmo, filled with plastic stuff. You will not see the scratch. (been there, done that). For this, best to just pay for the fill yourself, don't report to your insurance company.

If in your line of vision, your insurance company may not want to pay to fill the scratch, or to replace the windshield, because it is only cracked. Up to you, but talk to a glass place first, before reporting to insurance company.

Any idea how much the repair would run for cash? Every time I've had occasion for windshield repair, they want to bill insurance. I wasn't even thinking about repairing since the scratches are really small, out of the line of vision, and the integrity of the glass doesn't appear to be affected.

I received two rock chips in one week. They are within half an inch of each other. What are the odds? I had to get both of them filled.

Most insurances would rather have the scratches/chips repaired with no cost to you even if you have a deductable. It is a lot cheaper for them to have it repaired instead of replacing the whole windshield when it cracks with extreme weatherr changes. I believe the windshield on the Genesis is expensive to replace due to the lamination. Definitely have it repaired while you can!

I had two chips on my last car. Both very close to each other. It cost me $50. to get them filled in, and once filled in, I could not see them unless I looked very close. They did a great job. (They place a device with suction cups on the chip - the device sits directly over the chip with the suction cups located next to the center to hold it down - the center forces the special liquid plastic out, into the chip, then they let it cure)
Again, this was my former car.
