  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

OK new Equus 30 days old. Already has chipped paint off rocker panels on both sides. Body shop says the paint on the cheap plastic panels will continue to chip.

Not what I was expecting. My 7 car, 16 years old, doesn't have a single paint chip on the panel.

Anyone know a fix for this???

After some road patching near my house, my BMW took a beating from the small gravel. It got chips all on the rocker panels and in front of the back wheels. I can only say, try to avoid gravel roads. When I know about road repairs in my area I now drive my Suburban.

I have never driven the car on a gravel road. Body shop guy says it is chipping because of your shoe hitting the panel when you get in.

The cheap plastic will not hold the paint. Dealer says they have 3M tape for the problem, obviously I am not the first one to have this problem.

Disappointing.

You mistake me for someone who knows how to do that.

See picture attached. At first, I thought I had tar on the rocker panel, so I tried to remove it with tar remover. That only made the scar larger. I then realized that the black mark was the vinyl underneath, not something on top. So, do not try to remove something that is not there! As the scar got larger and larger, I finally realized that the wound was self-inflicted - I was hitting it with the left side of the heel of my left foot. I tried touch-up paint, but I just kicked it right back off again. The only long-lasting solution seems to be to put on some 3M or equal adhesive tape to cover up the scar and to provide a durable scuff surface for my shoe.

Thanks. That is what my body shop guys said also. Dealer says he has 3M tape to protect the area. We'll see. Sort of makes me mad that a luxury car did think people would hit the panel with their shoes.

That looks exactly like mine, except I have it on both front doors. I suspect that if someone gets in the back the same thing will happen. Not happy.

Do Korean's drive bare footed? ha ha

The clear 3M tape is hardly even noticeable. You guys should be good to go once that is applied. Same material that is used for the clear bras. Can be installed on trunk lips as well.

Right on. This came on my new Optima on the rear bumper in front of trunk lip.

When alcohol is involved that conditioning doesn't work for me.

Can anyone provide the part number or SKU for the clear 3M tape? Is it available at outlets like AutoZone, Advance Auto, and Pep Boys?

I'd say to measure the width of the application area, but here is an example:

Follow up. When to dealer and he is repainting chipped area AND installing the 3M rock guard tape. I didn't know that there is already some of the tape on the car from the factory, see forward of rear wheels.

Driving my loaner Equus. Take your time boys.
