  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

At my scheduled oil change the dealer told me that 6 of the 8 engine shield bolts had broken off due to rust and that I would need an appointment and $556.00 to "tap out" and replace. I told him to put the shield in my trunk. As I have always had the dealer do my changes these many years this reasoning sounds problematic to me. Has anyone had a problem with the bolts breaking off?

Are you talking about the fiber under belly cover on the front of the car? If so we haven't had one on our car in years. Personally it doesn't seem that big of a deal to me.

If the dealer has been changing your oil all this time it is weird they have not mentioned there was an rust issues before.

I am most concerned about the dealer's competency and truthfulness. Additionally, when I left the dealer my oil filter was leaking. I think perhaps the mechanic may have used a torque wrench and spun the bolts off be using the "on" setting. That is why I posted this thread.
The "rust" claim doesn't appear to be truthful based on the lack of response from this post.

I understand. Then I would find another shop.

As a mechanic in a salt area this is kinda normal across all makes. Those bolts are not the strongest or best metal.
