I was excited that my Equus has a USB port, but now I am a little frustrated by an oversight in the stereo that Hyundai could easily have avoided (and could probably still fix in a software update.)
I bought a 64Gb USB flash drive and loaded it up with songs. There's a top-level folder for each artist, and I have about 500 artists currently with folders for albums inside the respective artist folders.
It takes nearly a minute for the Equus to scan the USB drive every time I turn the car on! This is really such a pity, because it would be so easy for Hyundai's engineers to cache and store the file and folder structure of the drive during the first scan. Waiting for a one-time-only scan would be no big deal, and subsequent accesses would be nearly instant.
Sometimes I wish the Hyundai stereo guys would simply study the ipod and learn how simple and effective its interface is. You turn it on, and all your artists and songs are ready and waiting without delay. This is the result of serious usability engineering, and Hyundai could definitely learn some good tips about navigating large collections of music from the guys at Apple.
If anyone knows of a secret trick to get the Equus to cache the file/folder information, then please share it!
Cheers,
Rick
