  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Genesis Model Type
Genesis G90
I have a 2017 G90, I drove the car for almost a year before the passenger side seat belt started beeping with no one on the seat. I brought it to the local dealer and they were not able to fix it. I took the car back fully intending to blast corporate but by the time I got around to it stopped beeping. When it beeps the little red seatbelt alert sign is blinking as well. But not all the time. I drove it without any beeping for two or three months and then it started again. My car will be out of warranty in 2000 miles and if this beeping ramps up to the way it was before (constant) I will not be able to sell it. In fact I won't be able to sell in good conscience unless this is fixed. After a very nice person from Genesis called I was told that the seatbelt sensor is electromagnetic or something like that and the fact that I have a 2 pound audio player on my seat is causing the problem. I was told simply don't put anything on the seat as there is no fix because there is no problem. I very much disagree. This problem has been erratic and there were weeks and weeks when there was no beeping regardless of what was on the seat. I can't imagine having a car where I can't throw my purse or laptop on the front seat. I'm not sure where they expect you to put these things that you often access while you are driving. I just looked at some of the forum which I just found today and only saw one or two people complaining about this which says to me it is not a problem in most cars unless nobody that drives a Genesis ever puts anything electronic on the front seat! I have a hard time believing that. If anybody has any information or help I would greatly appreciate it. I think these are fabulous cars and this is my second one after owning an Equus. I would like to continue purchasing them but this sort of thing is the kind of thing that I find so disagreeable it would send me back to BMW. Please advise if you have any advice.

Complain to your congressman. It is a federal regulation to have passenger detection for the seat. I've heard of others with similar situations. A Miata owner had a heater installed in the seats and it sets it off. Other brands have similar complaints.

Honda had a 20 step process to calibrate the sensor but I have no idea how it is done on Genesis.

Government even wants to tell you where the kids can ride too. Here is some info about them
Why a Bag of Groceries Can Turn Off the Passenger Airbag

As for warranty, if it is a known and acknowledged problem you can usually have it covered. I'd also ask for the specifics of what amount of weight you can put in the seat. Of course, one answer is nothing loose should ever be left on a seat.

While I agree that a pocketbook should not be a problem I don't know if it is a calibration problem or a regulation problem.

Wow I just found out that on Page 2 -72 it says not to put electronic devices on the passenger seat - or a water bottle?
Does everyone know this but me?
Does anyone put any electronic device on their passenger seat with OUT the seat belt warning screaming at them. I am getting this car back in the same sad state as when it went in and have to figure out where to put a CD player so I can listen to my audio books since my two pound player can't sit on the seat next to me. That is just dumb in today's electronic world. A water bottle??? You are told not to put a water bottle on the passenger seat?

Quart of water weighs 2 pounds. That is what the cup holder is for though and our insulated bottle fits in it.

Copy your CD to a USB stick. I could not listen to a book at get anything out of it while driving. Paying attention to the road would make me miss to much.

It is not weight for water. It is that it is conductive material of liquid. So a water bottle in my purse is a no-no.
It takes forever to copy multiple CDs to a stick. I have a hard time believing nobody pops their laptop on the seat next to them.
I listen to audio books constantly. It is where I listen to the normal fiction of the day. The heavy stuff is read in a book at home.
Did you know the owner's manual said not to put lay any electronic devices on the front seat?

Well, if you stop fast you may find a case full of electronics with broken screen or crashed had drive on the floor. Not a place I put anything. I do put a couple of bags of groceries in the back seat on occasion.

How about a velcro strip on the bottom and set it on the driveshaft hump? Can you reach it there?

it's pretty common in most newer cars, my wife has had issues in her 2017 Camry, I have issues in my G80 with my work back pack which weighs about 30lbs., I had issues in my Lexus, Camaro, Avalanche, Chrysler 300C, MBZ E-class, BMW 5-series, going back to 2005.

I learned a few tricks.

first, for my wife: since her purse is more of a duffle bag and weighs about 8-10lbs, raise the passenger seat up about 1 inch from it's lowest position, and move it forward at least 2-3 inches from it's furthest back position. This changes the center of gravity on the seat and for my wife stops the issue. She doesn't require the below solution.

for me, since the back pack is a lot heavier, I have taken to just putting my laptop bag in the back seat or trunk, but on days where I have to put it in the front seat due to a child in the back seat and said child's school necessities in the trunk (back pack and 2 instrument cases). I use a seat belt bypass, which you can find here:

needless to say DO NOT USE when a passenger is in the seat.

personal water bottles are really not an issue. a 1-5 gallon jug is a big problem due to the weight and the bouncing it does on the seat which can cause the sensors to be come misaligned.

I've driven with my iPad in a tablet/laptop bag in the passenger's seat without any alerts, and occasionally had my iPhone there for awhile, also without issues.
