Should I even consider a 2012 5.0 non R spec

New member here and still searching for the perfect Genesis if their is such a thing. Haha. After reading different reviews online and all the stuff on this forum about the horror stories about some of the owners who have the 2012 5.0 R Spec and maybe even some of the non R Spec cars drinking oil at a high rate in some cases a qt. every 1000 miles or so which is insane. With this being said I have for the most part marked these off my list and to stay away from these. But when you run across a low mileage one not to far from you that you could probably get a good price on you start having second thoughts. I guess it would be crap shoot could be a good one or could be a oil guzzler. I have not gone and looked or drove the car yet and I don't have the exact production date but I think its earlier than later so that's not in its favor. Of course its my decision good or bad but what are the thoughts of the members here. Should I check it our, or run Forest run

Not sure what to tell you guy. I'm looking at a 15 genesis 5.0 manufactured in 14. Hopefully it doesn't fall into what your referring too. What's the R Spec though?

I believe the high oil consumption was only the 2012 rspec. But since the engine is the same non rspec would have same concern. No issue with the 13 rspec. Move forward 1 year I think you will be very happy

The high oil consumption applies to the early 5.0 V8, which was first introduced in 2012. It doesn't matter whether or not it was an R-Spec. I can't tell you exactly when it was fixed, so I would not recommend that anyone buy a 2012 5.0. This may include 2012 Equus also.

The most reliable Genesis V8 is probably the 2011 or 2012 4.6 V8 (unless you are looking something almost new).

Just went through the entire thread on the 2012 5.0 oil consumption issues that was started way back in 2012. Don't want none of that and will stay away from these like the plague. I agree with you Mark and the 4.6 route is probably the way I'll go if I purchase a Genesis.

When was it manufactured? They remedied the problem mid-production year, so the later in the year the better. I owned a 2012 5.0 Non RSpec for 50K miles and I never experienced the oil consumption issues.

2013 rspec 5.0 is good to go. Basically zero oil consumption. At least not enough to measure on the dip stick

2012 4.6 is a rare bird, but rock solid if you can find one.

What does the Carfax report indicate? These days, nobody buys a used car without researching Carfax.

My last car was a 2012 5.0 R-Spec. 70,000 Km and never an oil consumption issue. The 2012 5.0 V8 issue was for the first part of the years production and involved faulty piston rings. The rings had a special coating on them that was a patented process (owned by a German Manufacturer) that caused the oil consumption issue. Many of the engines with the issue were replaced once the owner's complained and the piston rings were changed back for the remaining 2012 production run.
