Should I get a Genesis? Couple of Questions... :)

Hey Guys!

So I test-drove a 3.8 Genesis (in Germany) today. Was really impressed. As I am currently driving a 2013 Chrysler 300 Luxury Series this came as a bit of a surprise... ;-)

Got a couple of questions though before committing to the new car:

• Bluetooth audio streaming worked fine with my Microsoft Lumia 950 - But when making or taking calls nothing was being transmitted tot he car. speakers remainded silent. Is this a known Problem with Windows Phones? Is there a compatibility list somewhere?
• Could you provide me with real world MPG for highway and city?
• The car seems to have a semi-automatic highway mode in Asia where the lane keep assist never shuts off - is there a hack to enable this?
• Are there any known problems/issues with this car that I should be aware of, especially switching over from the chrysler 300?
• How would you rate the navigation system compared to the garmin-based chrysler navigation?
• Is the car FlexFuel / E85 compatible?

Good morning, I'll do my best to answer your questions
-not sure about windows phones but iPhones have never had an issue in mine, the bluetooth connection speed is very quick
-I have the 3.8AWD and average 22mpg (city and hwy). Highway driving sees 24-25mpg for me at around 77mph.
-There may be, but there's been recent decisions (in the states at least) that coding can infringe on copyright laws or something like that so I don't know if I would mess with it.
-Rattles in panoramic moonroof and a torn door seal is all I have had to deal with. I think most issues I've seen are cosmetic, mechanically these seem sound.
-I came from a loaded Jeep Grand Cherokee (with the newest 8.4" Uconnect) and greatly prefer the nav/screen in my ultimate. Much better display of directions, and the split screen at interchanges is great. I also like the knob-based control vs touch screen.

I came from a Chrysler product, and have no doubt this will be far more issue-free. To me, it's also a much more refined ride at less cost than the Jeep (I bought my AWD ultimate for around $35k with 10,000 miles on it)

hmm one major issue I have with the Chrysler are the constant creeks, rattles and clicks from the sunroof and the area around the rear hand grips. Since this got worse over time I was looking into the Hyundai. Did Hyundai fix this for you? Having clicks and rattles in my care drives me CRAZY

I came from a Chrysler product, and have no doubt this will be far more issue-free.

I got the 300 as a re-import from spain without even a dealer looking through the initial quirks. So I had tons of issues at first that all got resolved except the rattles. for 40k miles no issues with the 300. Ride quality is a bit to stiff with the 300, found the genesis to be way more pleasent

My sunroof has never rattled. If you drive the car you intend to purchase and hear no roof rattle, you're probably good. Of course any car can develop rattles over time, but heck, my Sonata was rattle free over 5 years - I'm not expecting worse from my Genesis.

One thing to keep in mind that was pointed out to me by a colleague who drives a Lexus LS: when you drive a car that's really quiet to begin with, you WILL notice the smallest of squeaks and rattles that would be lost in another car amidst the din of road and engine noise.

Wrong - I'm on my second Genesis (due largely to pano roof issues with the 1st) and neither car had sunroof rattles right off the lot - the 2016 has now developed pretty significant rattles (at times - it comes and goes and might be temperature dependent from what I can tell) and is going back in for investigation. Virtually every Genesis loaner I've driven has also had some level of creak or rattle from the roof - I think they have a flawed design.

Yeah, like another poster said they are more obvious since the car is quieter. But they're there...and I say don't tout a quiet cabin if it's going to be filled with rattles at low mileage (mine has 15000 on it right now).

They're working on the sunroof, they replaced all my seals which helped for a bit but some noise is back. I'm waiting for a full blown TSB on this, supposedly they're working on how to fix it.

Another main source was the front door seals. They seem too thin, when you close the doors hard, the rear doors thunk closed and the main noise comes from the latch area. In the front, if you close the doors with a bit of force, the top of the door makes some noise against the frame of the car. This is where some rattles (over bumps) come from for me, and I can only assume it's due to seal thickness in that area. I thought it was due to a torn seal on the drivers side, which they replaced. But that didn't fix things entirely.

I'm not sure what year you had for the 300? I had a 2013 300C with no rattles, and no issues at 94k miles before trading it in.

The Genesis feels bigger and not scary fast but very adequate in the V6. I thought the Nav was much easier in the 300, but I also had a box which allowed me to program everything while the car was moving. Gas mileage is what another member posted and better than my hemi V8. Overall, the Genesis feels a bit more luxurious and I had every option offered in my Chrysler. The only thing I miss is the very thick steering wheel with the wood on top. The genesis has a pathetically thin grip. I'm currently having my SW thickened to rectify this issue.

If you have Bluelink and use the Google search function, it can't get any easier. Nav routing can be odd (and downright stupid) at times, but I find the interface and map display (with 3D) to be really good.

Well, I'd love to, but in Germany it doesn't work this way ;-) Only ~30 dealers or so in the whole country even sell the car. gotta order and wait for it ~3-6 months.

Good to hear that they at least acknowledge the problem. Chrylser/Lancia basically told me that the squeaks are 'by design'.

I would love to get the car without the sunroof but it is only being offered in a single edition with all the stuff for a fixed price here...

I've got a bit of a confusion about the rear seats: I've seen pictures from the official Hyundai PR Website that show the rear seats WITHOUT the AV and recliner console in the rear armrest. Is there a different Version of the Genesis without the rear controls but with foldable rear seats?

The tech-sheet even specifiy "rear seats 60:40 splitable" but the dealer assures me that every Genesis has non-foldable rear sets with those controls:

2012 Luxury Series. Had the rattles from the start and they tend to get worse when theres a huge temperature drop or raise. Funny enough, if I pull the rear hand grips on the ceiling real hard theres a single creek and the rattle disappears for a while

The only thing I miss is the very thick steering wheel with the wood on top. The genesis has a pathetically thin grip. I'm currently having my SW thickened to rectify this issue.

Hehe I am glad the luxury series does NOT have that ugly wood trim ;-) I very much like the Chrsyler 300 steering wheel tough, the Genesis SW kinda looks dull. How did you go about the thickening? Won't you loose the heated SW function if you do that?

Is there a list of differences between the current Genesis and the Genesis G80? Seems to be the same car at the first glance. Hyundai Germany told me that a "Facelift of sorts" is coming at the end of the year, I guess they mean the G80?!

2015/2016 Hyundai Genesis = G80.

Small differences are no 5.0 V8 for 2016 models, G80 5.0 V8 models include ultimate package by default.

Wrong. I've driven at least a half dozen different cars other than my own, a couple of them used. None rattled. Sorry Charlie, your anecdotal experience isn't of inherently greater value than mine.

Wow - you want to gloss over a problem that is real for many owners as evidenced by numerous posts on the topic here.

FACT is that I had my 2015 replaced largely related to sunroof rattles that were not present when it was test driven.

FACT is my 2016 has now developed significant roof rattles that were not present when it was test driven.

FACT is that many folks here have complained of similar issues with their G2's. No one is saying that all G2's will rattle, but there obviously is a pervasive issue with the G2 panoroof design or assembly.

So FACT is that you saying "If you drive the car you intend to purchase and hear no roof rattle, you're probably good" is completely wrong and really bad advice.

I'm just trying to make sure folks know that the Genesis is not perfect and to think twice on the pano roof option if rattle/creaks bother you - as you may or may not experience issues with it.

I will say that you can research this issue here in the forum. While are folks who have had this issue, many have not had the roof rattles. My take is that it's not totally uncommon, but that it's not a majority of owners who have that problem.

Another issue that got some "post love" in the forum, is wheel or drive train vibration. I did have that issue. I had 2 sets of Michelin MXM tires replaced. I finally got a set of Conti DWS, and that totally solved the problem. While my dealer was working on the problem, I had a loaner with the MXMs that had no vibration, so I'm just pointing out that you probably don't need to be paranoid about any problems reported here. There was a poll on the vibration, and folks that have the issue and have not been able to solve it are in the minority.

Perhaps people who drive on smooth surfaces never have the roof rattle so many seem to experience. I imagine a rough drive like the one you might have in New York City or Los Angeles might be cause enough to bring it on. Here in Florida we have very smooth roads and perhaps that's the reason I still have no rattles in my 2015...

I think this is spot on. Of course some have experienced the problem. But the suggestion that the very great many who have not experienced the problem will eventually is wholly untenable. As I said, if your test car doesn't display the problem, it probably won't. And yes it is possible that, as with any car, rattles may develop over time.

I appreciate the OP is not in a position to test his vehicle before purchase, but the bottom line is that I wouldn't let this issue dissuade him. His call, naturally.

The Genesis will be a nice step up from the 300, IMO.

mmm you got me worried already... the main reason i started looking for a new car was infact the super annoying rattles and creeks of the sunroof.

That's a fair point. Locally, our roads range from immaculate to totally crapulent - not to mention that they are perpetually ripped up and under construction in an endless battle to tip the immaculate / crapulent ratio more favorably. Still, not a rattle or squeak to be heard in my hushed cabin.
