I'm on my 3rd Hyundai Sonata a 2020 Limited which has been a great car especially with the amount of tech it has. 39 mpg on the highway makes me happy. The car just turned 28,000 miles and I'm really wanting to find a nice used 2022 G70 2.0 RWD with the prestige pkg. Looks like I will lose some of the tech features like the HUD and heated steering
wheel which I really like. Will this G70 still make me very happy anyway without these two items?
If I were you, I would keep that Sonata for a little while longer... for a few reasons.
1. A '20 Sonata will likely depreciate a lot less than a '22 G70 in another 1-2yrs, and it should still be under warranty. At that point, you'll have to choice between a used 2.0T G70 at even lower price, a new 2.5T G70, or maybe even a slightly used 2.5T G70.
2. G70 is in the middle of a refresh. The upcoming 2024 MY is just a mild refresh and won't see too many changes. However, it is still substantially new enough to affect resale of previous MY cars, especially ones with the 2.0T engine. That means you might be able to get a good deal on one 1-2yrs later, compared to right now. When I was shopping a couple of months ago, I was surprised at the asking prices of 2.0T G70s, which wasn't all that much less than the 3.3T. We have both a G70 2.0T and
Stinger 2.0T and like them a lot, but we got them at pre-COVID prices. Right now, I wouldn't buy a 2.0T at the prevailing prices. 1-2yrs down the road, things might change.
3. I ended up getting a '23 2.5T
Stinger and I like it even better than the 2.0T. It gets better mpg than the 2.0T - if you can believe that. Quite a few times, I got 40+mpg on my 25-mile morning commute. The highest was about 42.5 mpg. Yes, I hypermile, but that is phenomenal for a 300HP 3800lbs sedan. That said, RWD sedans inherently have higher driveline losses than FWD. You probably won't see 39mpg on a 2.0T G70, driven the exact same route as your 3340 lbs Sonata, but it would still be pretty respectable.
4. The 2.5T is based on Hyundai's newest Smartstream engine architecture - same as the 1.6T in your Sonata - and has both MPI and GDI injectors. The 2.0T is based on the older Theta 2 family that is GDI-only, so you'd need to worry about intake valve carbon deposit, along with the obligatory
Oil Catch Can. Not a deal killer IMO, but it is something to consider.
