  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone dealt with a side mirror that does not move in or out? It moves up and down. I have already replaced the master switch due to my disassembly gaff thinking I could clean out the master unit. It did not go well. And the only thing inside of it is basically a circuit card with some solder switches. So do NOT take it apart like I did.

Next I am thinking of maybe the mirror motor? I am not sure.

Thanks for any help you can give.

I do need to add is when you put the car in reverse the mirror will move in and out. Kind of weird. Since that implies the actual motor should be good. There is also no clicking noise. Maybe it is the same gears that are used for opening and closing the mirror?

Sounds like a switch problem. Any way you can clean it?

There is no way to clean it. It is a circuit board. I bought another master switch assembly.

When I got home I tested the mirror 5 different times. While turning the car off each time. The first 2 times it worked great. Then 3/4/5 time it would only adjust up and down. I don't understand how it is intermittent.

There's a motor controller for each side mirror and it has a "diagnostic response" function in it. If it works like the FAM, then an out of range error on that diag circuit (or any other) might trigger in a temporary shutdown until the car is restarted. Hypothetically if the mirror is jammed by ice, etc. it goes into a safe-mode instead of burning up the electric motors, etc. My guess: a wiring fault or blue crusties somewhere...

Thanks for the reply. I think I will start to pull stuff out of the mirror to see what the issue could be.
