  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

First time User...have Sedan 3 years ...for past month every time I drive have fumes ( but not really really strong) in cabin. Hyundai garage has no idea what problem is....most noticeable when I crack driver's side window just a bit.
No leaks visible etc......only theory is that tires have too much Tire Wet on them!...but that does not seem to make sense.
Would love some ideas ,thoughts on what this could be. Thanks, Gogero.

If it's coming from outside... I'm not sure. Have you detailed your engine recently? If you've used chemicals in there, they could be burning off with the engine heat.

What happened to me a couple of months ago was that I used a strong vinyl protectant on the dash components, and the heater was intensifying the smell. I honestly thought it was coming from the engine bay, but it went away after a couple of weeks.

Good luck!

I assume no exhaust leaks but what does the fumes smell like?

I think there have been several other threads on this issue. I would check them out.

During a recent fill up. a small amount of gas spilled over from the filler tube at the end of the fill up. I'm accustomed to having this just drain out the bottom of the filler area and that's that. But I've noticed that if this happens with the Genesis, I get a strong gasoline odor in the passenger compartment, which I don't get with other vehicles. There's no indication that the spilled fuel actually enters the passenger compartment, but the smell is strong, for at least 10-15 minutes. After that, no smell.

When was the last time you replaced the cabin filter? I know that the dynamics of auto's HVAC system is that fresh air to the cabin is allowed to flow more freely when the window is cracked even just a bit. You might be getting a huge in-rush of airflow through the cabin filter as you first open the window. If that filter is 3 yrs old, it could certainly be tainting the air quality. Lotsa good articles about the cabin filter on this forum BTW.

Filter has been changed. The smell is an engine smell...like exhaust. Comes on right away....and as I mentioned seems to intensify or be more prevalent when I crack open the window a bit. Been going on for 2 months now.

That's scary. Get it to the dealer PRONTO.

If your dealer gives you the runaround ("sorry... we can replicate the problem...") sit with them IN the car... let it sit for a while if you have to.

If you still don't get what you want, find another dealer. Good luck!

Take the service writer to a gas station and show him the on diction!!!

LOL -- how ironic that the iPad erred with "diction." :D

Cracking drivers side window will create a slight negative pressure in the cabin, which means it's increasing the rate of pulling in the fumes. +1 on advice to have the service tech in the car with you while you drive. I concur with above poster. Get to the dealer immediately and have them check the entire exhaust system for leaks. Tell them you're concerned about your safety and carbon monixide -- they'll have to take it seriously. If they don't, have a lawyer send them a letter.

Better yet, let them sit in the car with the engine running while you stand outside. When they pass out, open the door and you'll have made your point. :)

Seriously, I would get a dealer to look at this ASAP.

I believe it's easy for a repair shop to test for an exhaust leak. They can just use an emissions test probe inside the cabin.
