After a test ride with the Genesis 4.6 and another luxury brand I’ve decided that maybe the Genesis is not for me. I’ll wait for a test drive of a 2011 Genesis before making a final decision. If that future test turns out like the one that took place yesterday I will be moving on.
The test drive experience somewhat reminded me of the Genesis Coup test I took almost a year ago. I fell out of love with the 3.8 Coup because the steering feel was too loose. Too much assistance and not enough resistance. I guess I was looking for steering input similar to a 3 series or at the very least an IS350. Although the steering feel was a deal killer, I loved everything else about the Genesis Coup.
This time, for the Sedan, the issue was the thumpy bouncy suspension. Very noticeable. It is my understanding the suspension was updated with the 2010 model year. The car I drove was a 2010. My 10 year old daughter commented during the test drive that the seats were bouncy. My son complained that he could not play his Nintendo DS from the back seat. So I moved him to the front seat and the salesman to the back. Problem solved.
My thought, initially was perhaps it was just the model I drove. Since the dealer didn’t have another 4.6 on the lot we drove 26 miles to another and test a used 2010 4.6 Tech (17,XXX miles on odometern - still looked new in side and out) and was rewarded with the same bouncy ride. I will admit though, as long as the roads were perfect it was a smooth rewarding ride.
I remember viewing the car from a distance commenting to myself about how beautiful it was. It is a looker.
I haven’t given up on the Genesis Sedan. I’ll wait until the model year 2011 comes out. Hopefully the suspension will show more improvements. If not I guess I could try aftermarket kits. I’ve installed complete suspensions on cars before and know how much of a difference they make. But if the cost or too excessive ($3K+) or unavailable then I’ll move on permanently.
Until then I hope ya’ll don’t mind that I hang around from time-to-time silently keeping myself informed of all the updates Hyundai has to offer. This is after all a very entertaining Forum. Not as entertaining or dynamic as the BMW site (some of those guys are real pinheads...and I'm being nice), and certainly not dull like the Lexus site (wheels predominate the discussions
