  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Ok, so I wasn't paying attention, as well as I should, and I go to meet a Plano, TX Policeman. He was very nice, showed me I was doing 62 in a 45....nice.... He was hiding and " shot me " with Laser. My question is about Radar Detectors. What do y'all think? This is my second ticket in 4 months, so I really need to pay better attention and I'm thinking an Escort Max2 will / should do the trick. I know Laser is much more difficult to detect, but I think I need to start somewhere. Haven't had one in FOREVER...I want to enjoy my new Genesis. I offered to the Policeman that...."...I don't know my car...it only has 2100 miles on it...".....big bag of ..."...sign here..."

Opinions? Experience?

Max2... I have been multi decade V1 owner, and have current upgraded generation. The Max has proven to much better. Plus get the Live. Because, if he hit the laser gun on you and had not done that to card in front of you, you will not get a reading until it is too late.

With Live, likely someone else had spotted him there or close by in the past hour you drive by. You would have gotten the alert.

I know it's not the best option, I never have tried a radar, I think it's time to do as well, but I use Waze , the app for iPhones, it's pretty good with info as well where police, visible or hidden, but that info has been put by other users, and it takes a quite of data usage from cellphone, I open it up on highway, check the road, and see what's there, close it, and after a while open again. It has saved me from a lot of tickets.
But the radar would be a better option.

In my case, I am using two methods of protection, which I feel is better than relying on a single device to do it all.

Ka band is more prevalent in my daily commute and have been using the following configuration to a large degree of success:

1 - Waze app on my phone, has significant user base that tends to report both hidden and visible police presence in addition to traffic cameras. (I have already slowed down by the time I get hit by laser/Ka :D)

2 - Mid range radar detector that has a very good Ka & Laser detection range in addition to frequency identification features, GPS with traffic camera database and it is completely black with zero windshield reflections:

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/Whistler-Cr90-Laser-Radar-Detector/dp/B00DNJU61S/ref=sr_1_1?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1416121308&sr=1-1&keywords=Whistler+Cr90+Laser+Radar+Detector&pebp=1416121310092"]Amazon.com : Whistler Cr90 Laser Radar Detector : Automotive[/ame]

The detector required disabling the X and K band (minimize unnecessary chatter), updating the database and I have been very happy with it in the last 6 months for both my daily drive and a long trip GA->FL and back... (saved me at least three tickets in the last six months were Waze did not report the police presence)...

I still have some more research to do. Some research indicated that Whistler doesn't support Mac OS. Go figure....going to do a couple of " chats " with the manufacturers Early this week. When I see a cop, I have a very empty feeling...wonder if that's my cash flying out the window....for tickets and insurance...More to come....

Based on the research I have done, I've opted to have an Escort Max installed in my car...now installation is more about having power wires hidden with the detector mounted just below the mirror. As one might imagine, while driving home I received no alerts.....who's surprised? This device has lots of features and a relatively reasonable learning curve. More to come. An Escort Max2 has Bluetooth built in and Spanish language. I don't speak Spanish and feel the fewer " things " that can go wrong, well....the price difference is minimal. I'll let you know what I learn as I use the Detector.....Hoping I'll get the " tap on the shoulder " that I'm looking for....You know, "...Pay Attention!!.."

I have a lower end detector but in the city I got tired of all the false alerts, drove me crazy. I settled for just setting my cruise at 5 over the speed limit. And yes, my last ticket was in Plano and their speed limits are crazy.

I try to limit my speeds to 7mph over the limit.
I tend to get a ticket every 10 years.

Not much help when you have a spotter waiting on the overpass to gun you down.
That's what happened to me once in Eastern N.C. (near Goldsboro area)
Otherwise my Beltronics Pro500 has saved my a$$ numerous other times.

You made the correct choice. Oh, Live does not use much data at all. I leave it on all the time for business travel.. I estimate daily usage of up to 8 hours a day takes about 250-400 meg a month. Not bad. If your drive about 1509 miles a month, might use 100 meg a month.

I am upset with Escort as a company. Valentine ALWAYS has a upgrade path that is affordable for current customers. For decades they have done this.

Escort are jerks and do not do this. I have three Max including two that are within 6 months of Max2 introduction. Having the Bluetooth built in is better. And over time the power cord with Bluetooth will be discontinued. Their supervisors said NO upgrades EVER or decent trade in program. Suggested I sell my three unit on eBay or Craig's List. Lazy brats. It is easy and cheap to change the board.

IF Mike Valentine decides to become innovative again (verses today being a old stick in the mud) and comes out with game changer system, we can be assured he will have upgrade programs. And I will dump these Canadian and Cincinnati num-nuts and go back to Mike. For now, the performance and situational awareness capability of the Max or Max2 is more important.

Happy New Year, y'all!!

I have to say that my Passport Max has been a welcome addition to my " team ". Life has a way of distracting me - Max is ever vigilant. I just want that tap on the shoulder and I get that plus. When my bride and I are driving and Max spots something, we get a kick out of trying to find the source. Fascinating. Now, one day I was on the highway, cruising @ 76 in a 70 and I spotted the laser shooting cop on the side of the highway....Max was silent, though I wasn't going fast enough. I have to say, I was not happy, but realize that laser is a much smaller signal and he wasn't pointing it at me. Bottom Line: I'm pleased and strongly recommend the Passport Max......You won't be disappointed...

In case nobody mentioned it here, at 1,000 feet away, the laser signal is 3ft wide. There is no detecting that accurately.

My detector takes any laser find as a direct hit and scares the sh*t outta me. Its the only thing I don't like about Escort radar lol

Is there a way to mount these so I don't have a big wire coming down from my windshield and into the cigarette outlet. I purchased a detector but could not get over the wires and ended up returning it. Would love it if there was a model that could be completely hidden. Anything out there? Pics?

As a matter of fact, I had the same concern. I didn't want wires strewn across my dash. I went to Car Toys and they installed the Max. It's mounted on my mirror and the wires are hidden. Just a short connection to the detector and " voila "!! The detector is mounted high. There are those who swear the effectiveness of any detector is compromised unless it is mounted low. I can't say with a certainty one way or another. Mine is mounted high and I'm happy. Like I said, I just want a tap on the shoulder should I exceed the speed limit. I've met enough of our " finest " and consider my contributions to both Dallas and Garland, TX city coffers to be complete.

I'd go to a local Car Toys for a very professional job.

Hope this helps....
