  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Last night, I put my foot into the 4.6 and hit 115 in a big hurry!
The tach ratcheted up there but would not calm back down to the 1.5K rpm area. The needle stayed up in the 4K rpm range the entire night, even though the engine was operating normally.
The next morning, all was well and the tach functioned normall.
This is the second time this has happened. I took it to the dealer last time. By the time he got to my car, the tach had returned to normal. Swell.
Has anyone else had this experience?

Not me. But so far I have never been above 3K and I doubt I will ever get close to 4K.

Although my Genesis has not been much over 4000 RPM, my last motorcycle, a Honda GoldWing GL1800 had this exact problem. Matter of fact, many of these GoldWings had this problem. Turned out to be the Tach Needle shaft was slightly too long, and when the Speedo/Tach housing would heat up, the Tach Needle would touch the housing and get stuck. Would not go back to normal until the housing cooled. Don't remember if Honda had a Recall or a TSB, but dealers corrected it on all GoldWings that had the problem.

Reset the tattletale! j/k

The heating up of the needle makes sense.
I hope no one else has the problem, but corroboration would be nice.
Not sure what was meant by "Reset the Tattletale".
Thanks to all!

I run my engine to 6000 RPM frequently :D

Never had a sticky needle.

Not sure what was meant by "Reset the Tattletale"...

Sorry! In the boating world, speedo's and tach's have "tattletales", or a button which can be pushed to display the highest speed or RPM achieved since the last reset. Older ones simply had a second arm that would not return downward like a normal needle thus staying at the highest point it reached.

Forgot what forum I was on! ;)

Hmmm...my 4.6 never sticks...maybe it is because my tach. is always pointing north instead of west... HA!

For some reason my foot is attracted to the red line...:)

Response: Stiicking Tachometer needle and MPG

Thanks for that clarification, Nabber!
I ride a BMW K-1200 motorcycle that has an outrageous amount of torque. The Genesis 4.6 reminds of the my "seat-of-the-pants" dyno runs. The Genesis 4.6 engine is simply amazing....and it still gets 20+ mpg with ones foot into it!
I drove like an old lady for one tank and got 26.7 mpg.
I'm love it!

To Mark888: Just wondering, did you not follow the engine break-in recommendation of keeping the engine revs between 2000-4000 rpm for the first 600 miles (after warm-up of course)?

I saw that recommendation in the owners manual.

I generally drove at about 2000-2200 RPM at highway speeds (up to 80 MPH). I tried to rev the engine occasionally between 2000 and 3000 when I could get a chance to vary the engine RPM, but it is awfully hard to keep the engine much above 2100 RPM consistently while driving where I live. I also coasted when I could (the V6 is excellent at coasting), and then accelerated again, to vary the engine RPM.

I am not concerned about that, and frankly I am doubt they actually meant to say you should keep the RPM at least 2000 RPM at all times for the first 600 miles. Sometimes things get lost in translation, and I have seen a few cases where they obviously left out a "maximum," an "or higher," etc, in the owners manual.

I used the same procedure as above with my previous car, and the engine was in perfect condition after 11 years. I felt bad about getting rid of my previous car, and I didn't get what it was worth, but I just got tired of it and it looked like it would go for another 10 years easily (yikes!).

Indeed I did. I RTFM'ed and followed it stringently.
It's sticking again today...Hmmmm?

Got a call from the dealer today. Hyundai is shipping out a new instrument cluster.
I guess they tear the dash off and replace the whole thing. Hey, I get a 0 Mile set of instruments too.
Is that like a new car?:D

Response: Sticking Tachometer needle

Remarkable! Hyundai replaced my instrument cluster and I got a brand new car with zero miles! Wow!
The tach was permanently stuck about 3.2K and they shipped in a new cluster. It took them less than an hour to install it. Most amazing and I am an extremely happy Genesis owner.
