Stock sub with Dual coil 12 vs amplified stock sub with a single coil 12

I hooked up a 12 inch dual voice coil Soundstream SPL to the outs on stock amp. I left the stock Subwoofer alone. Now I'm thinking of pulling the dual voice coil 12 and putting a single voice coil Kicker 12 inch in its place and powering the stock Subwoofer off the Amp that's powering the 12 also. With the 12 dual voice coil and stock Subwoofer setup I feel the sound is missing the 500hz-1khz range. What do you guys think? Is it a waste of time to switch it up?

I'd be concerned about overpowering the factory sub (assuming the point is sending more power there). I also wonder if it even goes as high as 500hz-1khz? Might have more tuning capabilities through your own amp, which I guess would apply to either.
Fun question. I've been thinking about adding a sub to mine too.
