  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hey everyone,

My smart key with laser key was stolen last night! I have my spare key, which obviously works fine. The dealer says that if I have the spare smart key reprogrammed, the stolen smart key will be unusable. Obviously, the laser key will still be able to unlock the driver door, trunk, and glove box - but does anyone know if the car can be started? I'm assuming no, since the FOB is still required to be inserted and, at that point, the car will be programmed to a different frequency?

Thanks for any clarity!

You are correct. Only 2 keys can be programmed to a car at a time. If you have another one programmed, it will kick out the stolen key

Looking to update and upgrade your Genesis luxury sport automobile? Look no further than right here in our own forum store - where orders are shipped immediately!
Thank you! To be clear, I don't plan on purchasing another key, just having the existing spare key reprogrammed. Will that still knock out the stolen key? And if the stolen key is knocked out, the car absolutely can't be started with it - just inside, glove and trunk access with the laser key?

At least for the 2009 models, and I believe for the later years too, the car will recognize ONLY 2 key FOBs at a time. When you bring the spare one in to be added to your car, what'll actually happen is that your car, your remaining original FOB, and the spare will ALL get changed to a new code setup. That's what locks out the stolen one. You will need to bring in both FOBs that you want to use in the future though - everything has to be programmed at once.

Your stolen metal key will still unlock the doors & trunk & glove box but will be useless for starting the engine.

Great, thanks Mike for confirming and the peace of mind. My dealer is charging about $45 for the reprogram, so seems to be a decent deal compared to what others have quoted on this board.

Sort of like garage door remotes. If one of the remotes get stolen or lost, the 'base' unit can be CLEARED all remote codes; then program back in the one you have. Then any existing remotes are rendered useless. Then replace the lost/stolen one with a new one and everything works fine. The car will ignore any previously programmed remote, same way it ignores any other Genesis key that is not part of the mother ship.
