Hi,

I recently (4 weeks ago) bought Hyundai Genesis 3.8L V6 and have noticed the following issues.

1. I tried to merge on to a highway and when I accelerated (I pushed the gas pedel hard), the car was struggling to go above 40 Miles. When I pressed more, the rpm went up, but the vehile was not responding as it was supposed to. So I went to neutral and then put the shift back to Drive, and it worked fine. Currently the car is doing fine. But just have a feeling that the car lost some power.

2. EPA Estimate says that the car should give 19 in the city and 29 in highway, but I am getting way less than that. The dashboad message says that I am getting around 16 miles in the city and 25 on the highway. I don't know if this has something to do with my problem number 1. But members in the forum say that they get more mileage than what I am getting. Currently I have only 880 miles in the odometer and I don't know if I will get more gas mileage after the first service.

3. If I stop in the lights, I do feel mild vibration when the engine is idling. Is this normal?

After reading lot of reviews, I bought this car and I am just concerned. If someone had experienced the same problem and know answers, please help me out here. I don't want to take the car to dealership for smaller issues.

Thanks,
Venkat.

2009 - 2011 V6 seems to have a bad TPS (throttle position sensor) if I remember correctly from another thread and is replaced under warranty. Maybe same part on the 2012? Take it to the dealer and let us know what they find. These issues and conditions you mention relate to a bad TPS in many cases.

Mileage should be much better. I have been getting 31 - 32 mpg on straight highway trips. I checked it against the vehicle's computation it is almost right on.

With mixed driving I'm in the 25 mpg range but the computer tells me I'm getting 27 mpg so there is a bit of error with city driving.

The worst I've done is 21 mpg and that was with a lot of hard acceleration and lots of city driving.

As for the problem have the dealer fix it, your car should haul a**.

Hi Gray,

Many members are saying that they get better gas mileage than EPA estimates. But look at the poll I have created. 4 members have voted so far and the results say that those guys are getting only 16-17 in the city and 24-25 in Highways. Thats where I am confused. Driving habits can't be the reason for this much of variation. Do you guys think that fixing or changing parts will increase the gas mileage?

Thanks,
Venkat.

...Driving habits can't be the reason for this much of variation...

Sure they can. While one guy might drive 55 on his one lane highway, the other might drive 80 on the interstate.

I could have taken the car to the dealership by now. But I don't even know what I experienced is a one-off incident or something serious that I need to be concerned about. Because, each and everything gets reported to Carfax and I don't want the dealership to report trouble shooting issues to the carfax.

Regarding the gas mileage front, I am a smooth driver, but I drive mostly in the city where the speed limit is less than 60 miles. The average speed that I operate the vehicle for the most part is around 40-55 miles range. The reason I asked this question was that I was getting better gas mileage with my used Lexus ES300 and the EPA estimates say that Genesis gas mileage is better than Lexus ES300 which I am not getting.

This forum is really helpful guys.

If it happens again, try turning off the ESC. I've noticed that ESC will sap power to a degree, although nothing like what you're describing.

I remember trying a full throttle start and found the acceleration a little lacking. Then I tried it with ESC off and boy, what a difference; it really moved out fast.

Hi Jim,

Can you please tell me how to turn the ESC off?

Venkat.

One of the advantages of belonging to a good large forum like this is there’s never a shortage on input. Along with that advantage is the experiences the members bring to bear. I have had similar experiences with my Genesis so I can tell you what I found to be the problem with mine. In a word “Fuel”. In my case I was able to associate the problem with a particular gas station. As soon as I stopped using that station my car started running consistently great. The symptoms were like yours including the rough idle. Don’t get me wrong I’m saying that is your problem but if you haven’t seen it happen again I would say it was a likely candidate. As far as mileage goes I would wait till the car has had a good break in period before getting overly concerned. My 2011 Genesis with the 6 speed tranny has gotten 28 MPG on the highway and the mileage can vary from about 18 to 22 around town depending on conditions. Considering what I’m driving I’m very happy with those numbers. Enjoy your new car.

Ernie3647 brings up a very good point - source of the gas. Ethanol blends have less energy per unit mass or volume so it takes more fuel to do the same job - ergo MPG suffers. That can be a 10 to 20% hit on MPG depending on the local blends. The "oxygenated" fuels that many states use to combat smog formation (you can thank California for those fuels) is also a lower energy density fuel and leads to lower MPGs. My carbureted Corolla gets clobbered by this oxygenated stuff during the months it's required in SoCal.

Driving habits that can affect MPG:
1: accelerating uses far more fuel than maintaining speed. Rapid acceleration even more so.

2: leaving the throttle depressed right up to the moment you hit the brake pedal (when coming to a stop light or stop sign) rather than coasting a bit uses a bit of fuel.

3: A/C and headlights can be a big load on the engine, sucking down gas.

4: short trips where the engine isn't warmed up hurt MPG too; a physically cold engine saps combustion temps & energy into the engine metal where it does no good. The warmer the engine runs, the better the MPG typically (as long as it's not so hot that metal expansion causes parts to physically rub/bind or melt or warp).

5: dragging brakes and/or a misbehaving parking brake. After a 20 or 30 minute drive, hold your hand NEAR each wheel (don't touch them) and see if any wheel seems to be radiating more heat than it's twin (i.e. is one front wheel blasting more heat than the other front wheel); if so, that brake is either dragging or its twin isn't working at all - something is wrong in the brakes. Ever have a burned smell when you park? That could also be dragging brakes.

Those are the most common MPG problem sources. Lots of mechanical problems in the car and/or engine can affect MPG of course. Most engine problems that'd make the engine consume excess fuel would also trigger the "check engine" light... but chassis problems, fuel leaks, etc. won't trigger the light.

Hi Jim,

Can you please tell me how to turn the ESC off?

Venkat.

It's the button on the lower left side of the dash.

(Sorry, TJPark01, I stole one of your pictures. Send me a royalty bill. :D )

I answered the poll, but really have different numbers all together. I have a new 12 3.8 premium. With less than 500 miles I have been averaging 21-22 mpg going back and forth to work. I drive 8 miles each way, and hit 7 lights each way. I just took a 1000 mile trip to Canada and averaged 31.2 mpg both ways with the cruise set at 69 and the ac on.
The car has great power and I don't experience the issues you are describing.

It seems one needs to have some luck to get a good engine and good car. I have not seen better than 17 MPG in the dashboard for the city driving. Hope that improves.

I can understand disappointing mileage. What I cannot understand is that the OP states his vehicle was having trouble reaching 40 mph? That I am having a bit of a problem digesting.

Guys,

Ernie said that gas mileage is something to do with gas station as well and it turned out to be very true in my case. I switched to SHELL and since then I have been getting 21 miles in the city and 29 - 30 miles on the highway. Thanks Ernie.

Regards,
Venkat.

On mpg the variation in driving conditions is pivotal. My drive in the am to my station via my kid's school and return trip of 2 and a half miles is producing an underwhelming 16 mpg. Not surprising as the car is barely going to be warmed up on such a trip. However, get me out on the highway and I've been comfortably in the low to middle 30's.

You’re welcome Venkat I’m glad you’re enjoying your Genesis it is a very nicely engineered car. I know this sounds funny but I also came to the same conclusion concerning the gas with respect to my Genesis. It does appear that the car runs better and definitely gets better mileage with Shell regular. I’m sure they’ll be some that say it doesn’t matter “which gas” but I’m sticking with what I know works.

My 2012 V6 is geting 20 city and over 30 on the highway using cheap Walmart gas.

I am seeing 19 in City and 26 on HWY. HWY was mostly at 80-85MPH. I only have 2K miles on the car, however.
