  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So last night around 11:00pm on my way home a VW GTI pulls up next to me and wants to see what the Genesis has...

We both were cruising at about 70mph waiting to see who punches the pedal first. Well, he did and took off. I proceeded behind him with my foot all the way to the floor:)

I smoked his ass, getting up to about 125mph but guess who was in front of us with only a dim set of lights driving at about 65mph?

A Mass State Trooper.

I immediately pumped my brakes and got down to about 85mph while passing the trooper on the left side. (at this point I'm already getting out my papers from the glove box)

Because I smoked the GTI he was far behind me and didn't make it passed the trooper.... lucky him.

I finally reached a comfortable 75mph while not making it look obvious that I was speeding... haha:confused:

The cop pulled up behind me and probably ran the plates. He was only behind me for a short while and then backed off for the next 5 miles. The trooper took the next exit and that was it.

I couldn't believe I didn't get pulled over. He must of either liked my Genesis or wasn't in the mood to get out and write me a ticket. Either way I was thankful.

Am I stupid for driving and racing on the highway? Yes.

Was I dumb for not driving the speed limit? Yes.

Was I lucky for not getting a ticket? Yes.

Did it feel good smoking a VW GTI with a loud exhaust? YES!

There was a post on Edmunds about the stability at speed....

How about all of the above!:D Good story, glad it had a happy ending all around!

Have a similar story Ash...only I wasn't racing. Was cruising home from San Fran very early a few Fridays back. Didn't notice the speed but I was passing everyone very quickly. Before I new it, I saw a car way in back coming up VERY fast. Long story short, I admitted I wasn't paying attention to speed, just relaxing and enjoying the drive. The very cool CHP dude suggested that I put it on cruise control the rest of the way home. He did mention that he liked the car, but said 100mph + isn't going to fly.

Got to say, this car is very smooth at speed, but really tough to hold back on the open road.

I will admit it was quite the experience. I've never passed a cop on the open highway going 85 and not get pulled over. Its happened before...

Does anyone know if there is a governor on this car? If so, at what speed?

I assume this "cool cop" didn't write you a ticket? In some states, going that fast would have gotten you a "quick" trip downtown.

On the V8, I know it as 154 governor.

Ticket? Speaking as a former LEO, I would have arrested you for reckless driving and impounded your car to be honest. I had/have no tolerance for drag racing at excessive speeds on public roadways, especially at 11PM at night.

I can only assume he didn't hit you with lidar at your higher speed. NO cop would let you go if he caught you at 125mph - even one that doesn't like to deal with paperwork. There's no discretion at that point - you're a liability.

Here's hoping that was a wake-up call for you, though based on your "smoked his ass" comment - I fear it wasn't.

Be safe. :)

A few weeks ago I sent that picture at 150 to my phone then texted it to my girlfriend.... telling her I was having fun on the way to work. I think she actually believed it for a second.

Hahaha!

Kind of makes me want to find a track to at least say that I drove mine that fast. Even a spirited pass has scared the piss out of me, without even intending on doing something crazy.

What an idiot. The (stock) GTI is not that fast by North American standards - ~7.0 seconds 0-60 MPH, IIRC. (In Europe, where the average car seems to be in the 13-14 second range, it's a different story)

The 4.6 Genesis can probably do 5.5-5.7 depending on the driver and test conditions (hell, I think C&D got 5.3).

He really should have known better than to provoke a car that would just smoke him, unless he has serious mods...

Sometimes they want to lose - they just want to see a cool car get on it.

Exactly...I was heading home from the Sushi Bar last night and was approached by a Chrysler Town and Country...of all cars.

He pulled up along side with a van load of teens and was pumping the gas to make it bounce a little....I knew what he wanted and so at the next red light with my BALD tires...I smoked them out, drifted about 15 ft. and then cruised at 50.

Needless to say, the thumbs were up and out the windows when they passed!

Ahhh...that just warms the heart.;)
