  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Okay folks, I am a total stereo noob. I had 2 10" subwoofers in a box and an amp installed by Fry's in my last Genny, and I loved the sound, but there were some aspects of it the install that I didn't like. I didn't do any homework ahead of time and probably overpaid, to say nothing of the fact that the install took friggin' forever (the installer said that he was having trouble getting a clean signal off the factory sub line; whatever the case, I unfortunately chose to wait, and was there for like 9 hours).

In any case, I'd like to have the same level of sound my new 2012, but honestly I wanted to shop around on price as well as the install. Keep in mind that whatever I buy, I will have this professionally installed somewhere, as I have no aptitude (or patience) for this kinda thing.

So what I'm looking for is perhaps an online stereo configurator for noobs? I don't want or need top of the line; I'd like all of the hardware plus the installation to cost in the hundreds, not thousands. But at the same time, I don't know all the nuances about what components to avoid, which ones offer good performance and are good value for the money, etc. Also, I like the idea of a wireless gain control (which my last one didn't have).

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My setup ran about $350 for the parts and I paid an guy I know to do the install which was $150 if I remember correctly. $500 OTD which included an Alpine amp (500W RMS or 1000W peak) and an L5 12" square Kicker sub and a box off of Ebay. He supplied all the wires and other junk needed. The L5 sub is a pretty nice sub, but I would actually get their more top line sub the L7, but downgrade to a 10" so the sub would actually fit all the way back against the rear seat under the rear deck. The trunk floor actually climbs up at that point in order to clear the fuel tank, which makes my sub/box a hair too tall to fit under. My setup is a little underpowered as the sub is 600W RMS and 1200W peak, so I probably should have bought the next Alpine up, but the price increases considerably at that point. I have had 2 10" inch subs in the past, and I have learned with the proper amp and sub, more than 1 sub is not needed, and takes up mucho room.

EDIT - Just check Amazon and the [ame="http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-MRPM1000-MRP-M1000-Power-Amplifier/dp/B00142FJRC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1347643046&sr=8-2&keywords=alpine+amp+1000+watt"]Alpine[/ame] 1000W is only about $85 more than the 500W FYI. $229 with free shipping.

If you haven't taken the "dive" yet, give my guy a call; Brian @ Pacific Stereo, Woodland Hills, Ca. 818-610-1000 He can tell you what you need and you can go to the website and see the products @ www.pacificstereo.com and they can ship what you want and possibly hook you up with a good installer there!
