Tech Package w/CarPlay or Ultimate w/o CarPlay

I am looking to buy a 2016 Genesis and have been conflicted with which package to buy. Before searching for a car, I had wanted Apple Carplay mainly for navigation and began my search for only cars with it and ultimately the 2016 Genesis.

I really liked the ultimate package and ended up paying Carmax to transfer one to my city which is still in route.

When going through the forum, to my dismay, I found the ultimate package is incompatible. Now I'm conflicted on what to do. There's a car available in my area with the tech package which I can also buy.

For those who have the ultimate package:
1) How is the built in navigation?
2) Are the nav indicators in the HUD extremely useful?
3) Are the maps horribly outdated? Any place to update for free?
4) How much do you like the control dial in three ultimate package?
5) Anything in the ultimate package that you wouldn't give up for carplay?

For Tech package owners with carplay:
1) how useful do you find carplay navigation over the built in navigation
2) did you get tired of having to plug your phone in everytime you wanted to use carplay?
3) would you give up carplay for the ultimate package?

I have the ultimate
1. Its pretty decent. Why not just use Waze or some other app?
2. They can be, I find the gigantic screen more useful then the arrows in the HUD. Why not just use Waze or some other app?
3. You update them. Cost about $180 bucks. I just did it with no issues. As far as I know there are no free updates Why not just use Waze or another free app? (See a trend?)
4. The jog dial is great. Don't have to finger the screen.
5. The HUD by far the most useful option. Mostly just for your speed and current speed limit. I drove all sorts of different models. Once I got into a HUD I knew I wanted it. I didn't really care about car play or aa.

Note: The recent update on the Ultimate does allow for semi phone integration with texting. The car will read you and allow to respond to texts hands free. There are some other minor changes like reverse sensing volume and I think the 3d map changed.

Personally it comes down to what you want and need. IF you NEED car play and aa then you do not have a choice in your radio selection. If you can forgo the phone integration you get some pretty neat features for your compromise.

1. The navigation is as good as any. Sure, the POIs change, but they have not moved I95 or I80 recently. It has not failed me.
2. I really like being able to see the next turn in the HUD
3. No freebies that I'm aware of.
4. The dial is very handy. Faster, easier, especially for things like finding a motel along your route and calling them.
5. Ultimate all the way for me. I won't buy a car without the HUD now that I've had it for a few years. In every day driving, I use Ultimate features every time, how often do you really need carplay?

On vacation I use navigation a lot. Travelling around my area where I've lived for years, I know where I'm going so I don't need nav or carplay features, but I do use the HUD and dial.
Your choice in the end as your priorities may differ from mine. The larger screen is nice too.

I just bought a Genesis a week a go that has the Ultimate Package. No regrets at all. Although it would be nice to have Apple Carplay but I wouldn't want to give up all the extras with the Ultimate. Incase you don't know what all it comes with, It adds a smart power trunk lid, dual-zone automatic climate control, a color head-up windshield display, an upgraded navigation system with a center console multifunction controller and a bigger display, matte-finish wood and aluminum trim, a carbon dioxide sensor for the climate-control system and a Lexicon 17-speaker surround-sound audio system. The stereo sounds amazing. The HUD is super helpful and very cool (probably my favorite thing about the car). I highly recommend going with Ultimate.

I drove both an Ultimate and a non-Ultimate when looking and I for me personally I can't justify not having the HUD and upgraded sound system just to have CarPlay. Ultimate was the only trim I was considering and I finally found the right one last week.

Now going through the hoops to get Hyundai to transfer vehicle to me in MyHyundai so I can set up BlueLink. :roll eyes:

Right there with you on trying to get BlueLink set up. I added the requested info (proof of ownership, bill of sale, ETC) online MyHyundai and after waiting a few days with no response, I called them. I was told that the online request submittal isn't working and shouldn't on be on there. They had to open a case and I had to email them the documents. I did that on Tuesday and still waiting.

Good luck! It took me a month to have them transfer Vehicle to my account from previous owner... I uploaded required documents 3 times.... Enjoy your Genny!

Ha! That's what I found out on Tuesday when I called. Apparently my temp registration may not be enough to get the transfer of ownership completed, and I might have to wait to receive the title in the mail and go complete Indiana registration. Which is patently ridiculous.

That was my first email submission, then they replied that they also need the registration. So I uploaded a copy of the Temp reg from Illinois that cam with my 30 day tags. I don't really want to wait for the title to show up so I can go get plates and register in Indiana.

I have an ultimate, the HUD is cool, the GPS locks fast and never failed me once even before I updated it (was on the original version). Of course, you have missing small streets and what not but that's a given, also with XM and traffic data it helped me bypass many traffic jams.

The jog dial makes making changes and adjustments super easy. Rather than taking your hands off and poking at a screen, you can control everything from it.

2nd on the jog dial. It makes my life so much easier. The interface is so quick and navigating using the jog dial is so easy. It keeps the fingerprints off the screen as I never have to touch it

This may sound crazy, but I prefer the jog dial in Genesis to the Audi MMI jog dial I had in my Q5.

I do agree with you. I drove 2018 BMW 5 series for 22 days and could never hit the back or menu or nav button without looking at it. I can hit all three with no problem in my Genny with my eyes closed. I also think that the interface in general is easier and more intuitive.

Wow. Good input from everyone. Sounds like no one is regretting getting the ultimate and not many of you are voicing disdain for the native maps.

For the first replier who commented on loving the ultimate but also why not use Waze. Haha, I always use Waze, that's why I wanted to use it on Carplay!

Meh.... I use Waze too but not every time I drive. Know what I do use? The HUD.

I previously had 2018 Sonata Ultimate with CarPlay and loved it. However, I will take my Genesis Ultimate with no CarPlay over anything else all day long.

For me, the break even was the adaptive suspension, its only on the v8 ultimate afaik. That said, v6 has better balance so if you're into that then it's a moot point. I see comments about the sound system, if you are streaming audio via BT on the ultimate, its going to be worse than CarPlay because of how crappy the bluetooth is. On the ultimate you plug in the iPhone to USB, you can only control the native music app unless it glitches. (so no skipping tracks on spotify)

1) How is the built in navigation? - Terrible, but no worse than other mainstream car maps (Its not equivalent to a luxury car)

3) Are the maps horribly outdated? Any place to update for free? - It's always going to be outdated and maps aren't free for us
4) How much do you like the control dial in three ultimate package? - I love it, way better than trying to touch a screen while driving. The controls aren't always intuitive but it works well
5) Anything in the ultimate package that you wouldn't give up for carplay? - Adaptive suspension is the big one. Maybe the HUD, but honestly the only useful info it shows is blind spot & collision warning. If you can't keep track of your speed... there are other problems. The speed limit is also only as good as the nav, which isn't. I don't think the cops will take an excuse of your car told you the wrong info. Some newer cars (BMW?) will have the camera update speed sign info as you drive by.

If you want a HUD that reads nav directions from AA/CarPlay, I've heard Honda's latest systems do that. The new accord is basically a FWD version of the v6 genesis imo based on feature content.

I disagree with the NAV is trash, the 15 genesis 9in screen has way better resolution and graphics than 15 Lexus GS or LS, and I have yet to pick a fault with how fast it locks up and re-routing. The indicators in the HUD and distance gauge is extremely useful in the rare occasions that I do use it.
