  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

im going to be test driving the genesis (hopefully both v6 and v8) and im new to buying a car. what are the typical things i should look for?

Well here is again what I have posted in the past. Have fun on your test drives.

This is What should be done when purchasing, what is for the majority of us, the first or second most expensive thing we own. Research the reliability, performance and cost/economy of all cars that meet your needs and appeal to you and what you can afford. Then through research, weed out the unreliable, too expensive for you to operate, and ones that will not meet your performance preferences.

After the first "weeding out"Then take several test drives in the three or four cars left on your list(could be more). Then when you have it down to two or maybe three then take 3 or 4 long test drives in each on the kind of roads you normally drive on if not the exact same roads. If its a tie then find the one that is the best deal. It seems a lot of people don't do their homework and don't consider the importance of the costly investment of a new car.

Find a road that has a lot of buckled pavement. Then see how you like the ride of the Genesis. It can ride a lot stiffer than a lot of cars. That seems to be the major complaint of the Genesis. Personally, I like the ride myself, but for others it is enough to get rid of the car.

Yep... drive your normal route if you can. I know my route to work is probably the WORST in town - the city trucks ride on it every day, so they have the most potholes and "unevenness" around.

Oh, and based on input here, may not be a bad idea for you to let the salesman drive for a bit while you sit in the back seat (if you think you'll have passengers back there on a regular basis, and care about their comfort, that is).

You may not be comfortable doing it, but for an accurate test drive check the tire pressure first. Dealers often overinflate the tires to 40 PSI or so, when they should be at 33. As you can imagine, the ride can be radically different with an extra 7 PSI.
Other than that, some good advice already posted above.

One thing I wish I had done is to make a deal that included taking off the Dunlop tires and installing Continental Contact DW or DWS, or Bridgestone Turanza Serenity , or Michelin Pilot MXM4

Since you are new to buying a car, I would caution you against letting the dealer kick you around when negotiating price. Figure out what a fair price for the car is, and don't back down. You may have to walk out (or threaten to) the first time if they won't take your offer.

thanks, im going to bring someone who is experienced with buying cars with me too.

all in all thanks for the advice. i remember reading on a thread that someone brought a cd with them to test out the sound system too. i wanted to know if there were any of other small things like that i should be aware of.

I would add that you take the opportunity to drive it in both daytime and nighttime. The personality of a car can be much different under nighttime conditions...

In the dark, be sure to observe outside visibility and instrument panel lighting/style (colors, visibility, etc...). Also have a passenger turn on map lights, visor lamps, etc...to see how they affect the driver.

Lots of great advice so far. To that I'd add the following:

1. If there's someone who will often ride in the car with you, ask them to come along.

2. Resist the urge to fall in love with the car (that's hard to do, especially with the Genesis) and try to stay objective.

so i testdrove it for a little bit yesterday. i liked the power of the car, it was great but the materials in the interior felt a little cheap. the suspension was what i expected it to be (not that great). i think i would have enjoyed the drive a bit more when i got used to the drive. the dealer only let me drive it for about 2 miles. id like to drive it more, i thought you could drive much more than that on a testdrive. how long did you test drive the car for ?

I put 20-25 miles on the car I test drove a little over 2 years ago. The dealership actually let me take it out alone, as they were busy investigating with my Infiniti M35. Which ultimately ended up being my trade. The car was a demo and not the one I ultimately purchased. I drove on the highway and some side roads. It happened to be raining the day I test drove, which was a bonus in my opinion. Got to test the intelligent wipers and the wet grip. Ultimately made my purchase that day based on that test drive.
