  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driving home yesterday a huge amount of debris flew out of a pickup truck in front of me resulting in a broken windshield and several paint chips on the hood. No injuries, just me being pissed as I have never needed to have any body work or painting done an a new car before.

The autobody guy (State Farm authorized) said that they would need to remove/sand the entire hood and repaint using Dupont paint they would custom mix to match.

What is the experience of forum members with this type of work? Can I expect a real match to the original black? Will the paint match in a few years? Should I just go for a touch up of the existing chips-they are not really that bad in my opinion. The chips go down to what appears to be a white primer-not bare metal.

I have 10 year Bumper to Bumper extended coverage and anticate keeping the Genesis that long at least.
:(
I appreciate your opinions and experiences.

Take your time and find a highly recommended body shop they will have no problems matching the paint and will look as good as factory and will last just as long.

Don't go for touch-ups, that will look like hell in a few years.

Sanding and repainting is the best way to fix it although make sure the shop uses the same quality and number of coats as factory paint. Factory paint is often 4-5 coats of paint plus 2-3 coats of clear while most shops will only do two coats of paint and one clear, which wouldn't be as resistant to future impacts (from stones and such).

Colour-matching shouldn't be a problem if the shop knows what it's doing.

Talk with some of your local car buddies and ask about the best body shop around. You may not have to go with your insurance company's choice (at least you don't have to in Virginia). We just had my husband's 1990 Nissan 300ZX twin turbo repaired & repainted after a cop (!No siren!) ran a red light and crunched the whole front and the passenger side fender/door. Had the whole car done to remove 18 years' worth of dings and scratches as well as to ensure good color match. Car was/is as red as you can get--a really difficult color to match--and looks better than I remember it new. You gotta go for quality work.
