  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The car maker BMW should worry about.

And All automakers should worry about Chinese companies catching up!

Not that I don't love my Genesis, but something tells me Lexus is a lot more worried than BMW. BMW has had car companies aiming for them for years.

I'd have to agree with you on that one. I don't think Merc/BMW/Audi are gonna lose market share to Hyundai. Acura/Infiniti/Lexus, should all be very worried. But then again, I have been a Bimmer guy. I just couldn't get over the horrible looks of last product cycle. The new versions of 5/7 are much better looking.

BMW may be a great car, but a new 528i was absolutely the worst car I ever owned. It was a lemon, and this was before the lemon laws. This was in the late 70's, and to this day I have a lingering bad taste... Hyundai will never lose me to BMW, for certain.

Agreed, and the current generation 3 series coupe is gorgeous. In my opinion, it's one of the best looking BMWs I've seen.

While BMWs in general are not really known for their reliability, I think recent BMWs are better than late 70s BMW in terms of defects per unit.

Many issues flood the BMW forums, but most of my acquaintances who own BMWs are happy with theirs.

The majority of BMW complaints center around a handful of issues.
1. RFT - Run Flat Tires, generally despised for their high cost, poor tread-life, harsh road feel. This may fly on the autobahn, but in North America, they're useless.
2. IDrive - You need a advanced degree in astrophysics to operate the thing. 2009 and newer cars have the second generation version which is much easier to operate.
3. HPFP issue on all N54 engines. The high pressure fuel pump on the twin turbo inline 6 engine has been a major issue with people who spent a mint to buy these cars. The company has had multiple class action lawsuits against them and has subsequently guaranteed that part for 10 years/120,000-miles under warranty.

Thanks TJPark01, I agree with you and others on new BMW 3/5 series. The cars look beautiful and test drives were great. I concerned on RFT knowing car does not have any sparetire in the trunk, because of RFT. I ended up with Genesis v8.

A lot of people swap out the RFT, then leave a donut in their trunk. BMW continues to use these tires, even though everyone hates them, it makes no sense. On the Z4 I get it, in a 750, it's stupid. Edmunds is doing a Longterm test on the 750 and I think they have already blown out 2 or 3 of them in the Los Angeles area in just a few months. BMW does some odd sh**, but their followers are extremely loyal and incredibly passionate about the brand. Check this dude out...

In my humble opinion, I think VW should be quite worried about Hyundai. Products like the CC, Passat, and Toureg (each cosing considerably more than than teir Hyundai counterparts) have not been huge sellers for VW in their current renditions. The new Sonata is simply beautiful when compared with the CC. It also has more room. Hyundai has really don a phenomenal job with interior materials and design. I think VW and Audi still make the most desireable interiors, but, Hyundai is hot on their heals. If VW cannot reinvent itself and shed its perceived reliability issues, Hyundai could bounce them off the North American continent in the next decade or so.

A really good description of the CC that I read recently was,
"This is the complete antithesis of a Japanese car. Visually stunning, but mechanically underwhelming."
I think this sums up most of VW's products. Nice to look at, but you wouldn't want to live with it everyday. Where as, something like the Honda Accord is about as bland as a cheese sandwich on wonder bread. But you can beat on it senseless and it will never let you down. I don't think Hyundai is 100% there, in terms of Japanese reliability, but they are getting very close.
