  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

TDB: Let’s talk about the car itself. How does it compare to Genesis?

Ewanick: It’s about a half-foot longer. There are more similarities to Genesis than differences. We’re going to keep the same 4.6-liter Tau V-8 and the same 6-speed automatic ZF transmission. But we are going to adjust the suspension. We’re looking for something between the (Lexus) LS and (Mercedes-Benz) S-Class. Interior volume and noise levels will be equal to or better than the competition. We’ll have sound-deadening glass, for example, in all windows, including the rear windows and backlight.

TDB: Technology seems to be the calling card, these days? What else will you have there?

Ewanick: This car will have the Active Lane Changing system, and it will be the first car that will be able to tell the difference between a yellow and a white lane. It will have cameras front and rear. And it will have amenities, like leather and suede that you’d only find a car like an LS or S-Class. There’ll be Active Cruise Control. And we’re going to have AutoHold. If you’re in stop-and-go traffic, when you completely stop, you won’t have to keep your foot on the brake. But when you touch the gas, it will start going again.

TDB: I’m hearing a price tag of $60,000.

Ewanick: We haven’t decided yet, (but) in every other class Hyundai competes in, we’ve giving a significant price advantage compared to what we compete with. And, I wouldn’t see this as any different. One thing we’ll do is offer very few options. The more choices, the more expensive a car gets. So, we’re going to load it up and control the price point.

TDB: The winged hood ornament is distinctive – and very Korean. How does it fit in?

Ewanick: Our plan is to have an emblem when we bring the car into the States, but because we’ve received so many compliments – and I’m surprised, because I thought hood ornaments were going out of style – we’re going to make it a dealer-installed option.

The bad news first.. The 4.6 liter Tau is going to make for a very under-powered Lexus LS / Mercedes S-Class competitor. Of course the price speaks volumes but then again, you're paying less - and you're getting less.. Not sure how well that's going to work out..

On the other hand, the technology news is excellent! Especially "AutoHold" - which I practically can't live without anymore. :p

Makes me wonder what happened to the 5.0 plan...

if the Equus can get direct injection ready by next summer, they might be able to get 420 hp out of that 4.6 Tau. if they can get the 8 speed auto ready as well, they can gear for aggressive acceleration and fuel economy.

My guess is that the 8 speed automatic will not be ready. I just don't see them having enough time to get it running and test it appropriately for launch time.. That'll probably come with the first mid-life update.. As for direct injection, I think that's a good possibility.. And if the Tau has 420 horsepower, it should suffice.. I don't feel the Equus needs to be more powerful or faster than it's competitors - especially since it's less expensive. However, it NEEDS to be in the same ballpark...

Direct injection is rumored to be an option in the next Sonata (2011 available in Q1 2010). Personally, I am a little wary of this technology because of fuel dilution problems it can cause. Anyone with a direct injection engine should use synthetic oil and change it often.

S-Class? Yes
LS? No

Nearly every published acceleration time for the LS460/460L has been 5.9-6.6 seconds.

I also think 4.6 liter Tau only is not a good plan.

Hyundai Sonata (Toyota Camry Rival) = 2.4L / 3.3L
Hyundai Azera (Toyota Avalon Rival) = 3.3L / 3.8L
Hyundai Genesis (Lexus GS Rival) = 3.8L / 4.6L
Hyundai Equus (Lexus LS Rival) = 4.6L / ?

Logically, Hyundai Equus should get a 5.0L Tau engine.

Direct injection should give the Tau 4.6 over 400hp.

Strange. But I believe it. When I test drove the Lexus LS460 (few hour test drive), it didn't feel very powerful. Lexus claims 5.4 to 60 but if most people aren't getting that, than maybe the Equus has hope. You still have other vehicles in this class, however, that more often than not are real powerful. The 750i is also very impressive.. I just don't want to see Hyundai go "Cadillac" and make any silly mistakes...

Very true. This looks like it will be one of the slower vehicles in it's class along w/ the A8 and LS. Maybe they have something up their sleeve they aren't ready to disclose yet? It's a known fact they've been working on Direct Injection. Maybe our version of the Tau 4.6 will have DI and more HP/TQ? We would be a good "test" market since they expect to sell so few Equus sedans in the U.S. (1-2k per year).
