  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

The scoop on navigation map updates...I think

I went with the Nav that came with my car until the registration was available. It worked fine and I was satisfied with it. I understood updates are occasional at unknown intervals. I understood that through the interaction of several actors the registration may take some time. I assumed that any update would have incremental changes and not elemental changes, which proved to be true. I was willing to wait for my update until others had reported on the process to alert me of any issues. I was patient, in other words.
Many of us want the latest ASAP, but reality is, few really need every update. I did use the POI on a trip and found the stated Best Western is now a Ramada, but they did not move the highway that got me there.
I've used Garmin for a few years before buying a car with built in. Just from my experience, all are good, none are perfect. I've used it in three different countries.

A couple of people have complained about the routing. Some is strange, I've run into that when I tried it on routes I've used in the past. I've gone to places that had directions on their web site and said not to use navigation as you will be in the wrong place. One was in Gloucester MA. Another time we rented a villa in Italy and the owner sent me directions that said not to use GPS. I followed his and they were good. A few days later I tried the GPS and while it got me to the destination the route was heavy traffic, shorter, but took longer.

So as delivered by the dealer, do you really get the latest released version, or what was
loaded from the factory? Seems if it takes months for the registration to take place and we get 3 years of updates, the clock should not start at purchase, but at time mapnsoft is actually able to provide the first update.

Track it and complain if you are affected. Given that updates are roughly every 26 weeks and the delay is 4 to 6 you may fall in between anyway. I know you can calculate the odds for that but I'm not up to the effort. I'd probably be annoyed if I missed an update by a week, not so much if it is 12 weeks. I wonder if they would make good?

You get what was available at the time your car was built. What is the build date on your vehicle?

You can’t expect the latest to be installed if your car was built in January and the latest came out in July and your car sat on a train, truck, then dealer lot for 3-6 months.

My car was built in April 2018, based on information gleaned on this site it has the latest version at that time which had been released in summer of 2017.

I bought the car in June 2018 and there was a newer update, the dealer installed it for me before I picked up the car because I asked about it.

Then it took over 6 months before I was able to get on the mapnsoft site to get the next update, but that update while free and all had nothing in it that pertained to my area. Hell 3 updates and almost 2 years later and it still doesn’t have some of what I consider to be important updates for my area, new streets, a new mall with over 20 restaurants and 30 shops built on the old Rockwell Facility that has been in business now for 3 years. Amongst other things.

And frankly since I have apple CarPlay I haven’t used the oem navigation since, the traffic updates on the oem are 15-30 minutes behind real time, google and Apple maps are up to the minute, Both google and Apple maps are predictive and route me around construction areas where the oem system knows nothing about them.

Additionally both google and Apple maps take into account routes that I use when mapping out the route. For example the oem and Apple maps will route my work commute through an area where there are 3 high schools 5 grade schools and 2 jr. high schools, Morning drop off traffic is not reported so these routes are horrible, with Apple maps it knows that I go around these areas every morning so now it routes me the way I normally go during specific times and not the “most direct” route, because I don’t use that route due to the schools. But outside of those specific times it uses the more direct route.

Oem nav systems are inherently 2-3 years behind reality. Live systems like google or Apple maps are far better.

Thanks for the info. Don't own a Genesis yet, but being informed to ask the dealer questions once I get to that point is a bonus. I don’t anticipate using navigation all that much but will take advantage of what is offered. My Tom Tom that I had on my Harley, I only updated every couple of years for it did not have free updates. I always got where I needed to go. Sometimes with some unplanned excitement but that was half the fun on two wheels.

Gps on a bike. Never. Sacrilege. Been riding for 35+ years myself, I map the route in my brain prior to leaving, if I need help I pull over, look at phone, then continue. Don’t want the distraction while riding.

My riding buddies put post-it notes on their tank with directions. GPS mounted to the handlebars it was safe. I’m the anal engineer type who liked to know miles between towns. We did multi state rides mostly and always stayed off the interstates and without fail GPS would always hit at least one dirt road. I was road captain and that was sort of expected by my riding buddies. Good excuse for beer stops.
