  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

I guess this is an intro for me! Hi!

This may be long and uninteresting but if you want to read about how I came to fall in love with the Genesis here ya go :)

So a bit of history(since nobody asked), I’ve always owned beaters growing up (we're a family of mexicans lol). 1984 camino, 1993 caravan, 1993 Legacy, 1991 nissan pickup, 1987 blazer, 1993 Maxima, 1999 Sentra…. That is, until 2012 when I bought a “decked out” 2008 Mazda3 2.3L 5spd GT (all the bells/whistles except navigation). I put 60k on it over the last 6 years and it’s been a mighty steed. Growing up I always loved driving manuals. You can pretend to be a racecar driver no matter what the hp! I valeted for 9 years and swore an oath to always drive a manual transmission..... Well at the ripe age of 34 I am starting to get lazy. I go on trips with my girlfriend quite a bit (whether it's a trip to the grocery store, across the state or even across country). My speed shifting or jerky lazy shift habits are not conducive to her comfort. I like keeping the engine alive, spritely so I'm usually a gear lower than cruising lulz.... The “zoom zoom” of the Mazda for me has also become more harsh and less sporty over the years. Finally the 160hp(new at least) has begun leaving a wantingness of something more. Just a little more vroom.

With 130k miles on the mighty Mazda, it is about time for big maintenance. Clutch/tranny, joints, etc. Putting hundreds or thousands of dollar into it looks less appealing every day. The only appeal being the lack of a car payment ha. The car is still one of my favorites when it comes to the looks. Standing still it gives a good balance of sport, refined coolness. Not luxury or aggression like a full sports car or luxury sedan but something fun, playful, sexy and tasteful. I think they did a phenomenal job in designing that model of Mazda3. Well I knew it would be hard to find a car that struck a chord with me like this one has but I had to try....

So began the hunt for a new(to me) car! With a budget of around $25k I looked at older Audis, Mercedes and other luxury level cars. I wanted less than 100k miles and something under 5 years old. I gave up on wanting a stick shift since I’d be limited to Subarus mostly or mini coopers. I wanted luxury and comfort over sporty and speedy. So no WRX, no Countryman. If I was going for an automatic, I wanted flappy paddle shifting since I do want to control the downshift. So I briefly (briefly!) looked at the Dodge Charger R/T and Chrysler 300C or S? Because I decided I’d give up the hatchback(which I will miss) and manual, in exchange for comfort and AWD. Initially I wanted a V8 but then decided Dodge/Chrysler isn’t the route I wanted to go and would rather go with comfort/quality(the recurring theme).

Mercedes overall just looked too old from the outside and I’d have to go pretty old/used to get into the $25k spot. Trust me a 2014 CLS65 did look cool though! But 45k just wasn’t gonna happen. Hell my dream car is an E63 AMG wagon, but I’d like to actually have spending money after my car payment & insurance are paid…. I have a friend with a 2008 E55 AMG and his repair bills are insane. He has had all the air suspension worked on at least a few times and it’s been a good $1k+ each time. Those kinds of bills are not something I’m looking to pile up. Same with a friend with an Audi. Thankfully he had it on lease and the Turbo blew just before his lease ended so he promptly rode out his lease before dropping it for a Subaru. Now that's not to say things are perfect with the Genesis. I've read the carcomplaints website regarding electrical anomalies, and the fluttering of the tranny. I have to hold out hope that with a car that's had some good burn in time, that those issues have stayed at bay and will continue to stay at bay (knock on wood).

In looking for a new car I understood the fact that I had to analyze and weigh the wants and needs, the pros and cons. The main interest is keeping within the price point while maximizing reliability, quality, comfort and luxury oh yeah and AWD. Less important would be performance and sportiness. Not important at all would be MPG and resale value. Newsflash cars are never a good investment. If you love driving it and that makes you happy, then it's worth the poor investment ;)

I initially looked at the Equus. I got an uber ride a few months ago in an Equus and HOLY CRAP! SO SO SO NICE. I was floored. The space in the back seat was amaaaazing.

That’s where I started going down the Hyundai luxury rabbit hole :)

With the Equus, you get RWD so I that was a knock against it. I also wasn't super stoked on the exterior styling. It was still a little too old man for me. Eventually I realized it’s a bit too big. I don’t have many passengers in the backseat. Actually maybe once a year lol. So why have that space that’s wasted? So a Seven-Series sized boat car was not necessary and the ride was too far from sporty lol. That’s when I came across the Genesis.

It’s heavy but the 311hp V6 helps it move well enough. The suspension is soft without being hollow along with accurate steering that doesn’t feel too disconnected. The sound of the engine is a nice hum with the quiet cabin. The interior is tasteful and well refined (the one I'm looking at and test drove had all the packages included). The downshifts are crisp enough (not perfect but good). The 4 wheel grip is good and while researching I found the ratio can be up to 100% to the back wheels! That’s amazing! HTRAC is pretty cool. Granted you’re usually going to get power to wherever it needs to go I love that it can essentially become RWD. The cooling seats are something I’ve always dreamed of too lol. It's just a nice airy comfortable place to be! The huge moonroof also was a big oooh-ahhh factor.

The only curiosity I have with this particular car is it's history. It has 55k miles and has had two owners. Two owners in 3 years?
Why would that be? Lease trade in? Why did they get rid of it so fast? And how did it do so many miles so quickly?

Anyway that's the only thing I'm a little suspect about....

I have my Mazda going into the shop tomorrow to get an overall checkup to see the longevity of the clutch/trans, engine, etc. If the repairs look to be coming up within the next 6 months, and if they would be over a grand or two(the value of the car), I’ll be picking up the Genesis Saturday.

The few things I want to do right away if I get this Genesis:

  1. The 17-speaker lexicon system has no bass. I’ll play with it for a while but the 5 minutes I had in the settings the bass was all the way up, but the audio via blutooth from my phone did not sound complete. It had no low end bass at all.
    1. So that’s maybe $400-$800 in sub, amp and install.
  2. Tinted windows!! I usually go about 30% tint which isn’t technically legal but we’re not pulled over a lot for that (I’ve never been pulled over for it)
    1. My local guy does good quality tint for $200
  3. Exhaust update. Local custom exhaust shop is thinking a resonator delete and magnaflow.
    1. His quote was single in/out resonator delete ($100-$150) and $100 for magnaflow. Not sure if there’s dual resonators on the Genny? But thinking the cost overall will be around $500 maybe.
    2. Either way my dream is to have it sound more like an Italian V6 lulz right? Like a quattroporte or giulia… Any recommendations or tips (videos help too) let me know. I know I won’t get the low v8 rumble but having something with a little more bark would be divine. Not obnoxious just a little more aggressive.
