  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Has anyone had any success with getting Genesis to cover the replacement of the thermostat (2018 G80 Sport, TSB 20-EM-003HG) after the warranty has expired? I am the second owner of my G80 and 7 months over the 60 month coverage period. The car has under 46,000 miles on it.

My local dealership is telling me they are aware of the TSB, and my car is listed, but because I'm out of warranty I have to pay for the service (and it's not cheap). Thanks.

Unlike a recall, a TSB carries no legal requirement to replace anything.

Same car - 22k miles. Dealer did mine last summer - no cost to me. 20-EM-003HG Genesis Technical Service Bulletin
Thanks for the TSB. 2nd owner of a 2018 G80 3.8 and was just diagnosed with a P0597 code but have/bought a Zurich Extended Warranty (10 yr, 100k).
My mechanic wants about $1,500 ($950 parts, $550 Labor) for the Thermostat replacement. Seems very, very high.
The TSB states "No drivability issues are associated with this condition" and now wondering if I should do nothing, let my mechanic do it or take it to the Dealership...any advice?

If you are beyond the original warranty period Genesis won't cover it. The part is available from Hyundai (~$200) so you could buy it and take to a local shop. Don't think Hyundai and Kia dealers are allowed to wok on Genesis.

Not quite correct. They cannot do factory warranty work on Genny anymore. They can wrench on any car they choose to however - but on your dime or your 3rd party extended warranty.

The result of this failure is that the engine will run a little hotter than it otherwise would in certain circumstances. I'd be okay with that for a little while, but not for the long term.

Thank you, Speeder. The TSB has the part you provided but looking at my estimate, they want to replace the entire Thermostat housing. I'll need to ask why for a 36k vehicle that's not overheating.

Thank you for the advice. I'll ask the Dealer for an estimate when I go for the latest G80 starter solenoid Recall I just received:
NHTSA Recall Number: 24V-107
Genesis Recall Number: 018G
The Thermostat replacement will be my 1st time using our Extended Warranty. Either the local mechanic or the Dealer will need pre-authorization and not sure if (like health insurance) they have a Fee schedule and pre-determined price for this repair? Regardless, it will cost me $100 out of pocket but want to make sure it's done correctly. I'm leaning towards the Dealership doing the work in hopes they've done more volume on my specific vehicle than the local mechanic. Thanks again for your feedback.

Thermostat replacement is not rocket science. Any certified mechanic should be able to do it - though maybe not bring it to one that is freshly graduated out of UTI. A Genny or Hyundai dealer would certainly be able to do it, as it is a common engine for both brands and they would have done some before.

The thermostat change on a 2018 G80 3.3T Sport is a bugger. I had engine dropped to replace rear seal (under warranty). When I picked up the car it threw a thermostat error code. I suspect they damaged the thermostat. Dealer replaced thermostat but it was buried deep down between engine and firewall. Dealer thought they might have to pull engine to get to it, but were able to replace without removing engine (paid a 8 year hold with small hands to do the work maybe ;)).

Our Hyundai dealer (Reno, NV) has done warranty work several times on my 2018 G80 Sport. I think it depends on the model year, or maybe the individual dealership.

recently - in the past year or 18 mos?

Interesting. Maybe G has finally loosened the noose? H dealers across the country have been hardcore denying warranty work on Gs for almost 2 years now. Would really be cool if this were the case.

I had a 2020 G70 3.3, and now a 2022 G70 3.3 oddly enough both have had a thermostat open issue. I just changed the thermostat myself on my 2022... lemme tell ya... it's not fun if you dont got small hands. And the gasket between the thermostat and the flange... it should be illegal to make the gasket on the flange instead of the thermostat itself. And then even worse... bleeding the system ain't no small thing. Buy a vacuum kit if you plan to do it yourself. Burping using a funnel isn't enough. And use a scan tool that has a coolant filling mode, or a mode that allows you to run the water pump manually. Air pockets are EVERYWHERE.
