  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On my own driveway! Got into the car today to find everything upside down. All stuff from console/dash thrown onto the floor. Luckily i had nothing in my car at all, except 5 bucks of change in the ashtray which was gone.
What i dont get is how the guy managed to get inside the Geni. There are no visible entry signs. And I am pretty anal about keeping the car locked at all times.
Time to lock it in the garage from now on.

if it was locked...did the alarm go off???

Man...I hate that but Im glad no windows were busted or anything!

No, never heard the alarm. Is it ON by default everytime you lock the car, or do i have to change any settings?

There are certain high tech ways to get inside vehicles nowadays. Or you may have forgotten to lock the car. I would advise anyone to buy a basic CCTV system (100 bux), especially if you leave your car out on the driveway.

The alarm horn is so weak, no wonder you could not hear it from inside the house.

Sounds like a typical opportunity thief. If you left the car unlocked, its not unheard of that some random person tried the door handle, found it unlocked, and rummaged through your stuff. It happens all the time - in the future, make sure your door is locked!

Where was the car parked? Typical foot traffic nearby?

What about the alarm and safety features? This is bad news....

A 9mm would be a useful addition also. But don't leave it in the car!

I am leaning towards the fact that i may have left the car unlocked, sigh...
The thief tried to get in my trunk, but i guess he couldnt find the trunk release button. Instead he turned off the ESC and AFLS lol. Same with the external trunk release...good luck figuring out where the release handle is!! lol

I suspect you are right. I've done the same thing myself, once or twice. Thieves are in a big hurry and don't want to take too long...they just quickly look in the usual places...then skedaddle. Once a smash and grabber broke my wife's passenger window. He rifled through the glove box and center console but missed the GPS sitting under the driver's seat...despite the cord running from the lighter socket right to it.

i was under the impression the car locked itself after a period of time if:

1. The car is not running
2. The key FOB is out of the car

HMMM, may need to start paying closer attention to locking the doors

I'm positive that's not the case. I've left the doors unlocked with the key out and the engine off for an entire day before.

The only time I've seen the car lock itself is if you unlock by the remote fob and then don't open a door within 30 seconds.

This is exactly what my '03 Elantra did. Like you mentioned above, the doors would only auto lock if the keyless entry was unlocked and the door(s) did not open.

My son was telling me someone got inside his next door neighbor's car, opened the garage door from inside the car and stole a whole bunch of stuff, including an almost new LCD TV. His main bedroom is away from his driveway. It happened between 1 AM and 5 AM.

On top of it they stole a whole bunch of tools and other stuff from his garage.

That is a favorite trick of thieves. Break into a car in the driveway and get access to the house through the garage. They recommend you never leave your garage door opener in your car parked in the driveway...at very least, not in plain sight, which is an invitation (Would you leave your house key on the dash?)

This is also a favorite trick of thieves at long term parking lots. Break into a car and steal the garage door opener. Get the address from the registration card in the glove box. Once again, the answer is to not leave the garage door opener in plain sight.

Of course, on many new cars there is a programmable button to open the garage door. I'm not sure how many thieves are making use of that.
