In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. Hello everyone,

I have roughly 31-32K on my car. It appears as though I have until 35K to make a decision on an extended warranty. Or at least the warranty website I was looking at made it look like 35K is the cut off.

I know everyone is thinking - but the car is covered under warranty still. I am concerned about the electronics, the DIS, the Lexicon (I have the Tech trim.), Nav, etc. My car has not had a single electronics problem since I bought the car used with 10K last year. Once I hit 36K miles - the electronics will no longer be covered under warranty.

It appears the Hyundai Extended Warranty Platinum coverage will cover the factory stereo.

It looks like many people have trouble with the Lexicon/DIS very early in ownership. I am wondering if it is posslbe that after a certain period - if it is going to go out - it would have already. The retail date on my car is 9/2/08 - so it is one of the early ones.

Part of me has a fear that once I lapse 35K miles - and the amplifier goes out - I am going to be in serious trouble. I couldn't imagine the cost involved in replacing the amp. The warranty starts looking much cheaper. But then, I also start thinking that with a lot of electronics - I think that if they are going to go out - they will go out early.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I know sometimes this is a personal decision issue - but I just wonder if many people have stereo/nav/DIS problems later on in ownership. Like I said, it always seems that it is people who had less than 5-10K on their cars.

Statistically, infant mortality tends to be prevalent for electronics. As you mention, if something is going to fail it will more likely be earlier than later. However, this is just a statistic: obviously anything can fail at any time. I decided not to go with tech for this reason - it doesn't include anything that I really wanted, and it's just something else to go wrong. I did not opt for extended warranty at purchase time, and believe me the dealer tried every way he could to get me to sign up, even telling me that if I were to curb a wheel it would cost $650 to replace. Yeah, right...

Does Hyundai really have an extended warranty or are these really third party products? If later, 1) the fine print is critical to review, and 2) price of coverage is often negotiable.

Website is not owned by Hyundai. It is owned by Delray Acrua.

i got the warranty...and wanted the extra protection on a first year build.

Yeah - I knew it was a dealer who was selling the warranty.

I would assume that this is the same Hyundai warranty I would buy from my local dealer.

I am still on the fence on this issue. I will probably keep the car for 2 more years. I may just take my chances on the stereo. I certainly do LOVE the lexicon. Its my favorite feature of the car.

That's the conventional wisdow, but....

I suspect there is a reason that Hyundai (and other manufacturers) offer a significantly shorter warranty period on the DIS than on most other components. After all, they have access to enough emphirical information to make sound decisions about how long a component is likely to last.

I didn't purchase an extended warranty - I never do. Until I discovered this forum seeking other Genesis owners experiencing the same problems I've had, I didn't know that the warranty on the DIS was only 36K miles. So far, the amps been replaced 4 times and the head unit replaced once. I don't know what it actually cost the manufacturer, but it would have cost me more than $15,000 to have the work done if the car had been out of warranty.

I suspect that on average, extended warranties are a bad deal for the consumer. Otherwise, they wouldn't exist. It sucks to be an average-buster in this case.

I assure you I will be getting a quote from them if I decide to get it. They are both selling the same thing - it is a matter of who is going to be more aggressive in pricing it.

Sarge, What was actually wrong with your amplifier each time? Or was it the case where they just replace things in hopes of fixing it?

Neither I nor Hyundai have any idea what was wrong - or even if the same thing was wrong each time.

I settled a Lemon Law claim just two days ago. i still have the same issues with the DIS that I had before. Changing the amps and head unit didn't fix the problem.

Haha - I am sure this won't surprise anyone.. I called the dealer And..

The guy was under the impression that the Nav/audio/ DIS etc would be covered under the bumper to bumper warranty. I nearly laughed out loud.

So - I gave him an education on their warranties - nicely though. (regarding the 36K exclusions) He also was not familiar with the HPP plans and had to call me back. He wanted to push his third party plan - which I told him I wanted no part of.

So - I guess I will wait and see what he gets for me. I think once I have a firm price of the warranty ( I am requesting 4 year 48K - which would give me 48K additional miles on the electronics. ) I don't really look at the duration of the warranties because I drive 20K+ miles per year.

I will let you guys know what I find out.

If you decide to buy the extended warranty, there are at least two ways to keep the premium down. Price shop for the official Hyundai warranty in a few states. The prices can vary among dealers and different states. Secondly, consider having a higher deductible. A slightly greater deductible can lower the price and still generally cover an expensive radio repair/replacement. Also, compare the time length of the warranty vs. the miles that you drive. A shorter year can save money if you exceed mileage before time.

The site www.warrantyweek.com has interesting date on claims for different prodcuts, including car manufactures.

Good luck in your research.

I have a quote!

$1490 for 4 years 48K. I spoke to the Finance manager - and he said that he had no idea that there was an exclusion for the audio/DIS/NAV.

It is a lot of money. I am thinking to myself - I could just take the chance. If it doesn't go out in 2 years - then I am $1500 ahead. The rest of the car would still be covered until 60K anyway.

Anyone else considering getting the extended warranty?

When I purchased my 2011 4.6 a couple weeks ago I got the official Hyundai extended warranty "Platinum level" which basically extends everything (including the head unit and DIS) to 10 years / 100,000 miles. It is zero deductible and is not a third party plan--it is backed by Hyundai.

Avoid ALL third party warranty plans--they are not worth the paper they are printed on. I made the mistake once of buying one of these and the company went out of business and I was S.O.L.

I paid an extra $1250 for this coverage and feel it is totally worth it. I vowed never to purchase another "extended warranty" of any kind because of the last time I got burned... but this seemed like a no brainer after researching just how expensive some repairs can cost for all of the tech goodies in the Genesis.

Also, the guy that sold me the warranty said that this price point was only available at the time of sale... I told him I wanted to think about it for a couple weeks but he said he couldn't guarantee that price if I came back later. It might of been a load of B.S. to lock in the warranty sale that day... but I just thought I would mention it in case this indeed is a policy of Hyundai.

Word of advice, especially those of us who live in Florida...

The state regulates extended warranties and fixes the price at which dealers can sell them. For example, the platinum warranty at my dealership was $2,400.

So I purchased the same Platinum warranty from Jim Ellis Hyundai in Atlanta for $1,300, including extra coverage for road hazard which covers those expensive 18" rims on the 2011 V8 model.

10 year - 100k - and 0 deductible!!! It also includes the Nav.

Call and ask for Eric in Finance and tell him Jeff from Jacksonville recommended you.

AC is not covered after the 36k basic warranty ends. You need to pay Hyundai the $$ for the extended warranty coverage. If you offer a 10 year warranty and then exclude items like AC, Radio, NAV etc  but still better than other manufacturers warranty.:D

All those items are INcluded in my HPP Platinum extended warranty.
