In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. I just got my car back from the dealer. I took it in for a vibration in the seat and floorboards. They claimed the tires were out of balance. The funny thing is that I had the car in the shop 2 weeks ago for a vibration in the steering wheel which they also claimed was tires out of balance and they rotated and balanced them at that time. I didn't bump a curb or anything in that time. Could this be a suspension problem?

My Genesis has 700 miles on it... Noticed for the first time this morning around 35mph I was getting vibration from the wheels as if I had nylon tires on the car. Short trip, on the way back everything was fine.. Will let you know if I find anything further...

You have to go to a shop that does a "Road Force Balance". Go into Google and look up "Road Force". They use a balancer called the "Hunter GSP 9700". You can look that up also.

My Continental was having a "wheel balance" problem. Took it back where I purchased the tires, and they tried twice, and both times, the tires were in balance. Took it to another place, and again, they said the tires were in balance. Found out about Road Force, and first I took it to my local Ford Dealer, who has the correct equipment, but all they did was to say, "yep, the tires are out of specs, 45lbs road force on one tire, 32 on another tire, etc. etc. (Yes, I was mad). Then on a trip up to Penfield, I went to Dunn Tire in Henrietta NY, and they did the Road Force correction correct.

The Hunter machine first spins tire slowly, with a roller pushing down on the tire. Then a lazer light shows the tech where to mark the tire. Then a bar pushes on the side of the wheel, and again, a lazer light shows the tech where to mark the wheel. Then the tire is deflated and moved so that both the marks line up. After tire is reinflated, it is then spin balanced. Dunn Tire did all four tires, then the machine told the tech which corner of the car to place each tire. Worked great for me. Since then, I've found a tire dealer here in Florida who has a Hunter GSM 9700 and says he knows how to use it.

Get a Road Force Balance. You won't be sorry.

Thanks so much for mentioning this. I wasn't even aware it existed and having any kind of vibration in my tires or steering is a huge pet peeve of mine.

I hate to say it but after test driving a number of Genesis's at many different dealers I have been shocked with the number of times the alignment has been out of whack or there has been vibration. You would think they drive these things at the dealer and get them right before letting potential customers drive them.

On my Continental, the place I got my Road Force Balance (Dunn Tire in Henrietta [Rochester] NY) said that the manufacturer, Hunter, says that any force of 18 lbs, or under, is ok for the tire. Dunn got it as low as they could and I understand that some places want to get it down to under 12 lbs road force.

To those in Western NY, not all Dunn Tire stores have the Hunter GSM 9700, so you may want to ask first.

Here in Lake County Florida, Lake Tire has the machine. Have not used their services yet, but will do so before I use my local Ford Dealer again.

I finally took my car to have the tires road force balanced at a tire shop (discount tire). They said all 4 tires were badly out of balance but they were able to correct the problem. There's currently no vibration in the floorboards that I can detect (after balancing) and we'll see if it stays that way. They said if it happens again then there may be something wrong with the suspension. Also I called the Hyundai dealer after I got the tires balanced and they agreed to pay for the road force balancing since they've already made 2 unsuccessful attempts to balance the tires.

I have noticed when the car is cold (first start in the morning) after my usual 2 minute warm up, my commute starts on 55 mph road. For the first 1-2 miles there is a VERY slight shutter in the steering wheel (if I drive the same road when the car is fully warm no shutter)... I don't notice any vibration in the seat.

it is very slight. but I wonder if the tires/suspension require a little warm up....

or the ride is so smooth the rest of the time I notice what would be normal on another car....

Wallyman,

The same thing happens on my car too. This also happened on my Azera.
It is caused by flat spots on the tires cause they've been sitting on a spot for awhile.

If you left it for a couple of days it would be worse...but it always gets back to normal after a few miles driving.

BTW...I hate these Dunlops...they are terrible tires!!!! Oh ya did I mention that they are noisy too? They are!!!!

ciao,

Generally, if you feel the vibration in the steering wheel, as you did the first time, the balance issue is in the front wheels. If you feel the vibration in the floor and seat, it is coming from the rear wheels. It is possible that you did not notice the rears being out of balance until after you had the fronts balanced. But, before you think the dealer is screwing you, check and see which wheels they balanced each time. Also,, keep in mind, that you can lose a weight off of a wheel at any time. It is possible that when they balanced the tires one of the weights on the rears was not put on securly and came off. Doesn't hurt to be vigilent, but, based on your description, there are some perfectly legitimate explanations.

ciao,

I find nothing wrong with the stock Dunlops. Mine are not noisy and so far, they are wearing great. Also get great grip.

If you hate the Dunlops so much, you should get a new set, different brand, and let us know if they meet your expectations.

When my Dunlops need to be replaced, I may go with the BFG KDWS, not because I don't like the Dunlops, but because I've had the BFG KDWS on my Marauder, and they are standard on the Mustangs with 18" wheels, and they worked out great. They sometimes go on sale, and that is when I would buy them. If the price is close on the Dunlops, I may just go with them again.

What are the best tires for the Genesis?

I wish I new which ones were good and quiet...I will buy them when these Dunlops are dead.

I will as soon as these Dunlops are due to be changed. I'm not changing them till then. I just don't have loose cash to do so now. I wish I new which ones to replace them with. Have a lot of DD to do. PLUS Tires in Canada are way more expensive...not only that but I also need to buy winter tires cause it's the law here in the state of Quebec.

Regards,

It could. Welcome to the hell that was my Genesis. Hopefully this will be the only manifestation for you though. Are you happy with the ride otherwise?

I got a call from the Hyundai dealer today, they said if this keeps happening then the next step will probably be to replace the tires as they may be defective. I'll keep you guys posted.

My friends in Ontario tell me that Canadian Tire Stores are a good place to buy tires. If you think tires (or anything) is expensive in Quebec, just take a day off, and drive from Montreal, down into New York State, and stop off at a tire dealer in Glens Falls, or Saratoga, or Albany, and get your tires there. With the dollar difference, they are probably not any cheaper in the US than in Canada. (Make sure the tires look old and dirty when you cross back so Canada Customs don't get you). If you stay in the US long enough, you can bring back lots of stuff, including tires - I forgot how much you can bring back.

Je ne dis pas de faire cela, mais cela peut etre fait.

Looks like I'll be asking for new tires. We're back to shaking around 80 MPH. I called Hyundai service and it's not something they can do immediately so I'll be taking it in Monday and keeping a loaner for a couple of days while they work the issue out (they apparently need authorization from Hyundai corp or Dunlop to replace the tires as defective).
