  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Had Genesis 4.6 with 14K miles at dealer today for slow leak in rear tire. Was told that all four tires (Dunlop) needed replacement and were heavily worn on the inside. They felt that alignment might be the cause (no noticible pulling). They rotated the tires at 10K but did not note anything. Does this seem odd? Thanks in advance, Lori

I just had the same experience. I'm at 27,000, rotated at about 18,000. We had just about completed at 950 mile trip at 70-85mph. We were about 10 minutes from the house and heard a thump thump thump sound. I found a strip of tread, about 1/2" wide that stripped off the inner part of the driver rear tire. A place none of us looks at.... normally. So, we DIDN'T die... Thank GOD (literally), but I did limp the car to the dealer this morning with chord showing. I'm told (actully reminded) that Hyundai / dealers don't warranty the tires and I have to take it up with Dunlap. AND.... they can't get the Dunlaps. It's obvious to me that there is a rear end alignment issue NOT evident in the handling of the car. I AM getting a 4 wheel alignment.

So--- I'm replacing all 4 tires. I've been reading old posts for the favorite tire of the Owners. Nothing obvious is coming out. The dealer is suggesting a Toyo equivalent tire. Thoughts anyone?

Our '09 4.6 just passed 30K miles and we had to replace the Dunlops. We had one damaged at 1k (nail - in side wall) and several TPM air pressure warnings with the Dunlops before they came off. We also moved from S. CA to "upstate" New York and so wanted better all-season tires as replacements and went with the Continental ExtremeContact DWS (Dry - Wet - Snow) tires. So far (<1K miles) we love them. Less noise, better ride and great traction in wet and dry. No snow yet and so that claim is still untested. Unless they start to wear fast or have bad snow traction (both unexpected but ...???) we would do it all over again. We paid just over $800 out the door, mounted, balanced and all taxes/fees (our rate is 8.25% sales tax) for a set of 4. I believe (again just a guess) that the mileage might be down by ~1 mpg, but that's a guess at this point. Just not enough miles to be sure and if true it is minor compared to the improved ride and noise level. We do know that we would never replace these DWS tires with OEM Dunlops, to get more mpg, no matter what. The Genesis had been harsh with the Dunlops and now is still firm, but no longer a bucking bronco. The Dunlops were POS, IMHO.

If in doubt also get a good 4-wheel alignment too. Hyundai may not have had alignment right from the factory.

Lori

If tires have uneven wear it is generally caused by either of the following

Wrong inflation levels
Alignment issues

Generally modern cars need a 4 wheel alignment

Keep in mind that alignment may be fine today and if you hit a pot hole or something else it can then create unusual wear issues

Why didn't they check the alignment?

When mine wear out, I'm replacing them with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus. Tire Rack has good things to say about them and they have a 45,000 mile warranty.

Other well-reviewed tires:

BFGoodrich Advantage T/A
Bridgestone Dueler H/L Alenza
Bridgestone Turanza Serenity
Continental ContiProContact SSR
Continental ExtremeContact DW(S)
General Altimax HP
General Exclaim UHP
Goodyear Assurance TripleTred
Kumho Road Venture APT KL51
Kumho Ecsta LX Platinum
Michelin Primacy MXV4

Do you have a favorite brand? Check them out first. If not, and you're looking for an economical option, consider Kumho. Seeing as they're designed/manufactured in Korea, they're kind of a natural fit for the Genesis, I think.

If you're at all looking for "performance" rubbers, I would recommend looking at Continental's ExtremeContact line (either DW or DWS) -- assuming they'll fit your model of Genesis' rims. These tires are getting rave reviews from Tirerack users and also from folks on this very forum.

Otherwise, compare tires based on what you consider important. All these tires get "very good" or better reviews overall, so you're not likely to find a dud in the bunch. Of course they have very different strengths and weaknesses. Be sure to factor in wet and snowy/icy traction results by considering how likely you are to be driving in these conditions on a semi-regular basis in the next 6 months.

Also with great reviews -

Sumitomo HTR ZIII's (summer tire) - I'm very satisfied with these tires, and they performance and traction is unreal. Amazing tire.
