  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I have searched the archives, and seen some reference to maybe the gas tank has some extra capacity that can be filled if one does so very slowly. In my experience this seems to be correct. Extra fuel is always welcome.
On the other hand, the Genesis is the worst car I have ever had when it comes to refueling. Start with the filler being on the drivers side, the nozzle will not rest naturally in the filler tube, constantly shutting off before full, not allowing the full open setting on the handle etc. This is at multiple (all) gas stations in CA.
Anyone care to comment on the above observations?

That could be mostly a CA thing. My Genesis will occasionally have trouble with a gas pump, but that is only once every few months. I blamed the pump. In general, all pumps rest naturally in the filler tube and fully fill the tank on the highest flow setting.

The facts that pumps will not rest naturally in the filler tube and they shut off, etc. with yours, makes me wonder if CA has mandated a different type of pump handle from what other states may use.

Out of curiosity, why don't you like that the filler on the driver side? This was one of my little welcome features of the Genesis, after coming from 12 years of driving with the filler on the passenger side.

I live in CA and have no trouble at all filling the tank with the exception of nuisance shutoff's if the nozzle is not inserted properly.

I'd advise against continuing to add fuel after a "full" shutoff just because you can. Part of that extra fuel is going to get into the charcoal canister for the fuel vent system and cause odor and other problems.

CA mandates a vacuum hose at the end of the pump nozzle and this has two effects:

1. The nozzle itself is much heavier than without.
2. The vacuum hose makes the overall size of the nozzle much larger - sometimes too large to fit inside the filler pipe on the car.

Either of these issues can require you to manually hold the nozzle to properly engage the filler pipe. I used to have the same problem filling up the motorcycles.

And, if you haven't noticed by now, the majority of cars and pickups have their filler pipes on the drivers side - probably so that dumbski drivers don't run into the pump. This, in itself, isn't an issue as the problem would exist no matter which side the pump was on.

Mark down another reason CA sux! ;) There was another guy on here in the not so distant past that was railing on about not being able to fill up and that putting gas was giving him fits. Seems to be a far and few between problem but not an isolated one with some owners.

I agree with not adding the extra 2.7 gallons IF you are driving in town and or going home for the night. If however you are on a trip, and find a properly tuned gas handle, you will get 2.7 gallons extra every time. And no return fuel system problems. Because you are burning fuel as you drive and nit leaving this to saturate everything for a day. And as the fuel heats up from normal air temp, (in ground is cooler) again you are driving and using fuel.. No issues observed.

Page 1-3 of the 2011 Genesis Manual has warning Do Not Top Off gas tank. My Mercedes manual has same warning and states that systems will be damaged.
