  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

OH no.

I just bought a 2013 Genesis 5.0 R-Spec. The car looks like new and drives perfect, but within a couple of days the trans has had some strange shifts, clunky, long and jerky shifts.

The car was one owner but came from a dealer. No Warranty.

Hyundai says "new trans $4100" Local Trans shop says $3500.

Just checking if anyone else has seen this and fixed it any other way?

What transmission is it? Is it the Aisin 8 speed or a Hyundai one? What is the model or name of the Hyundai one if that is what it is?

Not for nothing, those prices look much better than I've seen in the past. I did a quick search and the link below is what comes up for a '13 R-Spec sedan (hopefully those shops aren't confusing your car with the R-Spec coupe).

Transmission - Hyundai (45000-4E060) | hyundaiparts

Perhaps you can try switching out fluids 1st?...or seeing if the dealer can give a look at the trans control unit (especially if you're considering replacing the whole thing).

My 2012 R-SPEC was doing the same thing. I bought it used and the dealer replaced the trans under warranty. You could take it to a Hyundai dealer and have them re-set the transmission adaptive values (I think that is what its called) and see if that helps. I think it is a known issue with this transmission. Good luck.

2012 rspec. trans replaced twice under warranty. original owner. if your car was just bought, and from dealer, you shouldnt have problem either from dealer or hyundai

Fluid swap won't do any good.
Issue is with the programmed shift points in the TCU.

I had the same issues in my Genesis 3.8L. Had the transmission replaced. Buy a extended warranty now. There’s a 30 day and 1000 mile waiting peoird but it’s a $150-$250 payments It will be well worth it. They paid out $13000 from mine. Paid $1800 from warranty direct 4 years ago. Car is now at 127000 miles and expired at 125k miles. Time to trade in.

How long have you had the vehicle/how many miles? Because it took me a good few months to learn and the car learn (it does) my driving habits. I have zero concerns now as to how it shifts and have had it for 2 years. I got my transmission fluid replaced at the dealer at about 85000 miles and it shifts great still. They only replaced about 1/3 of the overall fluid amount because I did not want a flush nor did the dealer even offer that.

I will say if you are ever turning sharp (like a U Turn) and want to gun it during mid turn...expect the engine power to cut to basically zero. So you do NOT want to try that maneuver with traffic coming up on you fast
