  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Transmission issues

hello everybody

I'm a newbie to this but thought I could get some good advice. lately my car has been doing a shift flare when changing from 2nd to 3rd gear then hard shifting from 2nd to 3rd after the flare. doesn't happen all the time just when it feels like it and the dealership found nothing wrong when I took it on. should I take it in again.. btw 2012 sedan 3.8 about 36000 miles

What is a "Flare"

a shift flare is when the RPM briefly increases on a upshift from my understanding I thought RPMS decrease on a upshift

Re: Transmission issues

Take it in for sure. Might be a control unit or SW glitch.

Automatic transmissions are no longer the relatively simple fluid coupling most of us grew up with. Now they are computer-controlled to respond to a variety of operating conditions including engine load, RPM, throttle position etc.

In the old days I would have told you the transmission is "slipping" when upshifting but that is probably not the case with a modern transmission. There are a number of electronic and mechanical switches and valves that control shifting and if any of these are failing it may cause the transmission to do what you are describing. Unfortunately, because it is intermittent you may have trouble getting your dealer's attention.

The only thing I can suggest is to try to isolate the condition where the condition occurs so that it can be caused on demand. I would also ask if there is a log of some sort on the car that could trace an event such as this.

With intermittent problems, one good tactic is to make a video of it and show the dealer.
