  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Discussion, I have experienced a problem with my 2015 sedan 5.0 transmission I was driving on freeway when car made a noise and I noticed the rpm where really high and my mph were decreasing so I merged to side of freeway and put it in park waited a minute or two and proceeded to put it in drive but it wouldn't move but the rpm would increase but the car wouldnt move but going back to park the tranny worked in reverse, neutral, and park just not in drive ran it through a couple times with same outcome. After getting towed home a mechanic friend and I drained and refilled the tranny fluid and disconnected the battery with same outcome after retrying the process . Has anyone experienced or had issues like this and is it fixable with out costing a small fortune . Thank you

Had similar problem years ago. Plan on spending a small to medium fortune. You have a problem with internal parts.

I wonder if it would be more or less expensive to replace it with a junk yard transmission.

I actually just went through this with my 2015 5.0, it indeed was a fortune... First off it is difficult finding a shop who will work on these 8 speeds, the internal parts are also hard to find or just not available. In the end we ended up buying a used unit from a low mileage car (65k) and had the transmission swapped totaling around $5000. And well that transmission only lasted 3 weeks before the exact same thing happened (and within that 3 weeks the blend doors failed causing the AC not to work so that was another expense). We are so sick and tired of the car and putting money into it that once it is fixed again it will be immediately getting traded in. In all we will have about 10k into the car in the 1 year of ownership and we have only put 3 thousand miles on it in the last year due to it being in the shop longer than it has been in the driveway, we wish we had bought a Toyota instead...

I do actually like my 2015 5.0, but I agree that it main weakness is that major OEM repair parts(engine and transmission) are hard to find(back-order) with no aftermarket options for many of the parts due to minimum aftermarket support for the car.

As you stated, many good rated import shops in my area do not even want to work on Hyundai/KIA models. Not good for high mileage models.

If I sell my Genesis, I will just go with a used Toyota/Lexus model. The OEM parts are easy to find with large aftermarket support as well. Plus, every import shop in my area will work on a Lexus/Toyota.

My 5.0 is @ 111K - Still runs well. My biggest gripe is the dimwitted transmission. Had some flaring and hard downshift occasionally, but a fluid change / new filter pan has cured it... mostly. Still does it intermittently but not often. Sometimes works flawlessly for weeks. Never was to be confused with a ZF 8 speed at it's best to begin with.

Most of the other stuff is just little bits - a flakey front parking sensor, deteriorated rubber on trunk release and a stripped gear on the driver's side folding mirror. Some other rubber bits on the outside are starting to perish - but 8 yrs. worth of Texas heat will kill just about anything.
