  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I got a pretty spicy quote on replacing the transmission in my 2015 5.0 today. 13k is a hard no go for me. Sounds like they basically scanned for codes and said "Needs new trans". However, they are telling me the engine has to come out to R&R the trans? I've done all of the maintenance so I've been under there quite a bit over the years, but from what I remember nothing seems like the trans couldn't be dropped from the bottom like any other car? Any Hyundai techs out there have any experience? Found a couple of yards local to me that have a trans in stock for well under 2k.

Also, I did some digging on the tech site in regards to any reprogramming procedures. Anyone here have any suggestions on a J2534 interface to I can follow the instructions for the "Oil-pressure characteristics input"?

What was the cause of the transmission failure?

The A8TR1(8 speed transmission) in our cars can be rebuilt; therefore I would just let a transmission repair shop fix the issue. Most automatic transmissions usually just need new clutches and maybe updated sun shells under normal wear and tear conditions.

The parts are available for the A8TR1; so just have it rebuilt.

I completely agree with that. I'm in the process of calling around and trying to find someone that wants to work on it. Also since the dealer wanted to pull the engine I'm wondering if they are going to want to do the same thing. I never really looked that hard when I was changing fluids over the years to see if I could get to the top bellhousing bolts with my long extensions, or if the subframe is somehow in the way of dropping it without dropping the engine as well. Plan on getting it home and on the quick jacks to see for myself this weekend.

The trans I found has 60k on it, so even if I had to buy a J2534 tool I figure I would be in it 3000-3500 in parts.

What caused your transmission to fail?

The 5.0 engine can be removed without removing the transmission; so I assume that you can remove the transmission without removing the engine as well.

This guy in this video explains how to separate the two to remove only the engine.

I live about 50 miles outside of Nashville and the local transmission shops didn't want to touch it. Having it towed into Nashville to a shop that has experience with it was going to be quite a bit, so I opted to first try the local Hyundai dealer praying it was more of an electrical issue instead of internal mechanicals. So what caused it to fail is still a mystery since they just looked at it for 15 minutes and quoted me 13k. And this was after I dropped it off last Wednesday. Up until yesterday they never even checked it in and it took me not being very nice to even accomplish that. I won't be doing business with them for anything in the future, that is for sure.

The factory service manual says that the engine and transmission must be removed as an assembly, and then separated after removal.

I saw that too. I did talk to a recommended trans shop and he called bs on that. I’m gonna look for myself and see if I want to swap in one in my shop.

The A8TR1 repair does need to be performed by a transmission repair shop that have the right tools and knowledge to repair modern Asian transmissions; which will narrow down your shop options for sure. Most transmission repairs shops are only used to dealing with common older domestic and some older import transmissions; but do not have experience with modern transmissions that require expensive model specific service tools that interface with control modules.

Dealerships rarely ever service internal parts; they just swap out old parts like the whole transmission. I would have an transmission shop properly diagnose the issue or just buy a used transmission and drop it in. A transmission swap does appear doable as an DYI job per the video I posted. However, you would need to buy an expensive scan tool(over $1000) that can access Hyundai GDS module software downloads by subscription. Not an easy repair for sure it seems. It seems to be an easy mechanical swap, but the software interface requirements really complicate the process.

It looks like I will need to buy a Launch brand professional scan tool if I am going to keep my 2015 Genesis for any major repair that I may have to perform like an transmission swap or even an ABS module bleed.

The service manuals always list the best method(dropping the sub-frame) for performing an engine/transmission related repair in a shop with a lift as most repair shops will have one. Most engine and transmission repairs are best perform on a stand or work bench; hence the removal recommendation by dropping the sub-frame to remove both the engine and transmission as one unit. Dropping the sub-frame is also the quickest method to remove both.

Unfortunately, most DIY owners do not have an lift as an option, so we have to do it the hard way by separating the two.

I know it will cost more than getting something from a junk yard, but a Factory Re-manufactured transmission is the best choice. You'll know the transmission has been assembled correctly and have a warranty to back it up.

carguy75, you seem to know a lot about the transmission swap for these cars, mine has very hard up and down shifts in the lower gears and I want to swap it out. spending $4700 at a trans shop on my high miles car is not worth it. the car may be only worth $7000. Any way, do you know what reprogramming is need and how it is done, i can easily swap the trans myself but need the info on the reprogramming, there are rebuilt valve bodies on eBay, I thought I would try that first.

I have no actually have no experience repairing or replacing the Genesis transmission, so I do not know every aspect needed to replace one.

However, from experience with other cars I can tell that the 5.0 automatic transmission can be pulled for the car without removing the engine. The Hyundai service manual lists the module programming and calibration processes needed for a transmission swap.

You may only have to swap out a bad shift solenoid in the valve body to get rid of your harsh shifts; not replace the whole transmission.

Here is an example of what to do when changing the transmission per the service manual.
