  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

At 36,000 my 2009 4.6 started sticking in 3rd - even at freeway speeds and would not go past 3rd after a hot restart. Only after a thorough cool-down would the car get past 3rd gear (reverse was ok).
Hyundai REPLACED the transmission (under warranty).
Any body else have this happen or similar? My love affair with my Genesis is on the rocks!

Prior to this I've had my share of electrical problems - Bluetooth replaced 2x, XM module (head unit) replaced, amplifier replaced... but nothing mechanical - except new rear tires every 14k m.

Thanks for ringing in.

good lord, i hope that was just an "early build" let down.. i am glad i have the sickness....getting a new car every couple years (or in the last 4 cases every year lol) just sucks when you love a car/truck and it starts to go on you? my father has a 2003 TL and outside of an airbag replacement and brakes he hasn't had an issue with it.. i guess there's good and bad in every make/model.

The ZF in the 4.6 is a proven reliable transmission, however any transmission can have a problem.

From what I've read on this site and elsewhere, for the ZF transmission Hyundai basically does no repairs on it at all - if a ZF transmission has a problem, it's swapped out completely and sent back to ZF for teardown/diagnosis.

I had to replace a ZF tranny on my BMW several years ago and I can tell you that BMW would not repair it and instead, just replaced it with new transmission from ZF.

I believe the switch out protocol is used by most manufacturers today. I had the transmission go out on my 2007 TL and they simply replaced the whole unit.
