  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

On my way home from work yesterday, cruising around 35 mph getting up to speed (50 mph) the car shifted really hard into the next gear (possibly 3rd or 4th gear). When I came up to the next red light, as the car started down shifting it did it again. It would do this on and off all the way home no matter in ECO or Sport modes.

My question is, do you think this could be tied to the recall issue with the taillight assembly allowing water to affect the electronic signals sent to the transmission? It states on that recall as one of the three symptoms (#3) that "A delay in the engagement of the selected gear, which can increase the risk of unintended vehicle movement and of a crash"

I personally don't think the two things are related but thought I would ask. I called the dealer and made an appointment to drop it off this morning. I will keep you all posted.

Wow that sucks. I wouldn't rule out the taillight. Either way it sucks to be without your car (trust me, I'm without mine now having my head unit replaced).

If it is related, Hyundai didn't mention this as one of the issues pertaining to the recall. Good luck.

Always, did you check the obd2 for codes? Sounds like your trans is toast.

Have you had the transmission serviced every 60,000 to 75,000 miles? How many miles on your car? How many miles on your car?

I think the recall is for engagement from on mode to another, P -> R, R -> D ... etc.

Rough shifting between specific gears is not good. What is your dealers loaner policy? I think a new transmission may be in your future. :(

Let's not panic the OP here guys. Lot's of things can cause rough shifting. I had a quirky throttle position sensor on my Acura that caused rough up shifts.

Well in any case it's covered by warranty, even if it means the worst (best?) case scenario, a new tranny. At that point it becomes an issue of being without one's car, which is where my comment came from.

What happens when you use manual mode?

Update:

Well after I started this post, I hopped in my car to go to work and guess what! It drove perfectly fine. Not once (and believe me, I tested it thoroughly) did it do the same thing that happened to me yesterday.

I am now tending to believe it might be somehow associated to the recall. We did get a hard rain storm while at work yesterday and just maybe (even though I see no condensation in either tail light lens) water got in and somehow made this happen.

I told them what happened and to inspect the tranny. I am also having them do my normal service (rotate tires and do an oil change) while they have the car.

I told them to call me if they found an issue with the transmission and they haven't called me yet. I don't expect them to find anything as they won't be able to duplicate it (seems to always happen that way - To me anyhow).

To answer your questions above:

  • Miles on car - 9800 miles
  • Gunkk: Codes - I got no error messages onboard what so ever.
  • homeofstone: I only have 9800 miles on it so no service except checking fluid levels on the tranny which were good.
  • DFWGenny: My dealer gives out free loaner cars to anyone who purchases a car from them so that won't be an issue. I confirmed that again when I dropped off the car this morning and they said if we need to keep your car overnight, you will get a car to drive home with.
  • NSXNEXT: I have had that same issue with one my Hondas in the past. A $100 part and I was on my way. The more I think about what happened, the more I am leaning toward it being that the car was hesitating before shifting, then when it did shift it shifted hard.
  • I would be fine with a new tranny. My guess 30 days just for one to show up in the states plus another 3 days to do the swap out.
  • DFWGenny: Manual mode: I did not try the manual mode to see if it would happen in that mode. Great idea.

I have a 2012 3.8 Genesis Tech and the exact same thing happened to me yesterday. Today I drove to work and no problems. Let's see what happens on the way home.

I had an A6 that did something similar. The tranny ECU had failed (error code). Unfortunately, the tranny fluid had leaked out over the years through the engine seals, so the slam-shifts from the bad ECU destroyed the transmission.

Update:
  • Left work late and by the time I got there the mechanic had left so I still don't know what is actually wrong with my car.
  • They did give me a 2015 Genesis V6 so I am a happy camper. Black with Beige interior. No wood dash though.
  • It does have the upgraded seats but not the HUD or DIS knob.
  • Can't tell you how much I miss that HUD just on the 30 minute ride home from the dealer. That is a must going forward on any new car I buy.
  • I will update you all tomorrow after I get the call from the Dealer.

Update:

Spoke to the dealer and they found nothing wrong with the Tranny. I pick it up after work. Will keep you posted if it acts up again. Hopefully it was simply tied to the recall even though the recall doesn't state my same issues.

Can't wait to hit the gas in the V8. :D

Update:
  • It has been a month and a half and zero issues.
  • Been on multiple mini road trips with zero issues.

I have a 2009 Genesis sedan V8 4.6 with 25k miles on it. For a couple of months now I`ve been feeling some kind of transmission failure. This only happens when I start from a stopped position and drive under 2,000 rpm. When the car changes shifts you can feel and see how the rpm fluctuate. If I accelerate faster the transmission doesn`t fail. This makes it difficult to know if it is a transmission problem or an engine failure. I took the car to the dealer and they have tried changing spark plugs, coils and gas, the problem hasn`t stopped. Anyone has an idea on what this might be?? Truly appreciate the help!

Can you see any condensation in your tail lamps? Not sure if your MY is wired the same as the G2 but if it is, this could be a factor in your problems as it somehow effects the shifting of the tranny when the connector in the tail lamp gets wet. Just a thought.
