  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Driving down the interstate around 65MPH, the trunk lid popped open and raised itself, without any input from driver. Key fob was sitting in the cupholder, so no accidental press.

Anyone else have this issue/ideas of what might have caused it? My suspicion is that it somehow wasn't latched all the way or something like that.

I have been here for more than a year and never encountered this reported on the forum. Do you have the 2020 with power trunk? Are you US, or elsewhere? Was there something in the trunk, something bulky, something that could move? Anything? Latch looks clean and undamaged?

2019, US. Nothing in the trunk at all (fortunately), and upon inspection of the latch, everything appears normal. Everything latched correctly when I raised and lowered it a few times after the incident.

Opened by 'itself'. Lol good one - next time cut out the emergency release before doing the deed.

Jokes aside, I assume you wouldn't be able to open the trunk while the car is in drive, but I may be wrong? Worth testing it out to narrow down the cause.

I don't think it failed to latch properly, because if it did it would've popped back open right away since its a power trunk.

On a side note, does anyone know why in the world you cant close the power trunk using the key fob? Makes absolutely no sense to me.

The whole release mechanism might be defected, I had that problem in my '18 g80 sport, it was replaced by dealer under warranty. The part alone cost around $500

Hold the button in thats on the dash and it will close. Never been moving to see how auto open or close will work?

Should not open when in gear.
The fob is probably a safety thing so you don't accidentally close the trunk while your kids are playing in it. Even using the dash button you have to hold it the entire time to close.

Thanks for the responses, all. The vehicle is a 2019, so it is not equipped with the auto close feature. We are located in the USA, in response to the first poster - I don't know if that makes a difference.

Update:

Attempted to reproduce problem in the following ways:
  • Press and hold fob button while in park: trunk opens as normal
  • Press and hold fob button while in drive, but stopped: trunk does not open
  • Press and hold fob button while in drive, in motion: trunk does not open
  • Press dashboard trunk release button in park: trunk opens as normal
  • Press dashboard trunk release button in drive, stopped: trunk opens as normal
  • Press dashboard trunk release button in drive, moving: trunk does not open
I also took a short drive to see if I could reproduce the problem. In true troubleshooting fashion, I could not.

Inspection of the latch and mechanism appeared normal and undamaged. Contrary to wife's earlier statements, trunk contains some miscellaneous papers, a plastic bag, and a blanket.

I am currently operating under the assumption that some thin piece of material - e.g., paper, plastic bag, or a corner of the blanket - was closed in the trunk latch in such a way that the sensors registered as "latched," but was susceptible to slipping out.

If this does not happen again before the next service, I plan to just mention it to the service advisor, but I fully expect them to be unable to reproduce the problem.

my wife's 2014 hyundai santa fe has this problem also we hear rear hatch solenoid repeatedly activate while driving. dash lights then confirm the hatch is open. this has been going on for months. the latch is being commanded to activate from some where. the latch open command on both key fobs does not work.

I'm having the same problem as G-970076. My 2015 Santa Fe hatch solenoid clicks repeatedly and unlatches the hatch - sometimes while driving and sometimes when just sitting there in park. It has started to happen more often over the past month. When this happens, sometimes I cannot open the hatch at all, either pressing the button on the hatch by the license plate or using the key fob. I'm trying to figure out if it's an issue I can fix myself or if a trip to the dealership is needed.
