Trunk smell

I have a 2015 Genesis sedan,3.8. Great car!! Chemical smell from trunk area like formaylde(?) won't go away. Car is 60 days old had entire contents out and washed. Stuffed with dryer sheets , still stinks. Help!

Not sure on this one. My 5.0 doesn't have a trunk smell. What kind of matt do you have in the trunk? Have had other cars with aftermarket cargo maps in them that stunk up the trunk before.

Pretty sure you would know this but if there is a dead body in there that could have a distinct formaldehyde smell. This probably doesn't help either but mine came with the OEM mat and no smell. We will not count the whiskey that decorked back there...

Yes on my 3.8 trunk has stunk from day one. Sort of a smokey chemical smell. Figured it would go away with time. Five months on still smells as strong as it did on day one. At least it stays in the trunk and does not stink up passenger compartment. Very bizzare!!!

Never any off odors in my car's trunk, even after I added the OEM reversible cargo liner, which some reported had an off odor. Take it back and make them resolve this for you - a bad odor would affect resale, so you can threaten using the lemon law if they don't resolve!

I am guessing it is a trunk mat or something similar made with rubber. Check all the parts in the trunk, including where the tire, jack, and battery are located. If it is a rubber part, it is possibly made in China with used motor oil.

About 8 years ago I bought an oil filter wrench that had a rubber piece that wrapped around the filter. As soon as I opened the package, I could smell the odor coming from the rubber part. Pretty sure it was made with used motor oil. It was made in China.

Yes, mine has had the same strange smokey smell from the beginning. I figured it was the rubber backing on the OEM upgraded carpet/mat that came with the car.

Inspect your battery.

Early Prius models were known to smell like a bandaid or farm animals from the vent in the rear deck which led down to the battery.

Yup yup, you gotta be careful, lots of car parts being made from the Chinese restaurant deep fryer grease traps too. One time I checked my iPhone 6 and sure enough it was made in China, sent that garbage straight to the trash bin where it belonged.

Very funny. The Chinese can make products that are as good as any in the world. The problem is that you have to tell them exactly what you want or don't want as far as materials, processes, etc. One problem is that there are very weak hazardous material regulations and enforcement in China (just ask the people who live in the Chinese city that blew up recently).

Most Apple products are assembled by Foxconn and Apple knows exactly what goes into each one.

Thanks for the replies. I am going back to the dealer. I took out the entire contents of the trunk and washed them aand the trunk. It has stood open in the garage all weekend with a fan blowing in it. Still smells, it has got to be the factory mat backing. Dave

Mine had a smell right from the beginning 5 months ago. Smelled like burnt wood, I thought maybe it been near a fire. Don't notice it very much now. 2G 3.8 Sedan DOB 3/18/2015.

You might try letting it off-gas for at least a month. If that does not work, ditch them and get something different. I would also complain to HMA, especially since it may be an accessory installed at US port of entry.

I have a 3.8 Genesis and have also noticed the "smokey order" in the trunk. Car is 8 months old and the smell is still there. Please post what you find out and what your dealer says. Thanks.
