Used 2019 or New 2020

Hi folks,

I am in the process of purchasing a G70 but have a somewhat difficult decision in front of me. I was all set to buy a new 2020 G70 from my local dealership. The deal they're offering me is $49500 on a new 2020 G70 3.3T AWD with Sport package, which I thought was pretty good. However, I just found out about a guy at my work who bought a 2019 G70 3.3T AWD with Sport package just back in August and he's only put 5K miles on it since then. He's getting transferred to my company's India office and he doesn't want the car anymore and is willing to sell it to me for $43K. So now I'm wondering which one I should get. For an additional $6500 I get a new 2020 model, plus all the perks that come with a new car, e.g., 3 year complimentary valet service, 3 year complimentary Genesis Connected Services, 10 year/100K powertrain warranty, etc. I know the 2020 models also come with a power liftgate, although to be honest, that's not worth a whole lot to me. I know at the end of the day $6500 isn't that much money, but still, it's a pretty nice vacation somewhere. Just wondering what current G70 owners think is the better buy - a new 2020 model or a slightly used 2019 for $6500 less?

Tough call. Not a bad deal, bot a great deal. You lose some warranty and services so you can easily put a price tag on that. Figure 8 oil changes and the cost of an extended warranty. to get the 100k back. Unless you are going to trad it at 50k, then it does not matter.

Is it a color you like? If so, I'd offer a bit less and see what you can do. Would not be ethical to screw the guy but you want no regrets later. Right price could be a sweet deal.

I'm only interested in the 3.3T AWD with Sport package, and there isn't one within 700 miles of me. Believe me I've been looking. And I don't really want to go thru the hassle of purchasing one from out of state.

I'm leaning towards the used car. Paying $6500 less is nothing to sneeze at after all. There's still a pretty hefty balance remaining on the 5 yr warranty, and even though I don't get the 10yr powertrain warranty, I doubt I'll keep the car for longer than 5 yrs.

To me, that's probably the biggest complimentary benefit that I would be missing (again, the 10 yr powertrain is nice and a great warranty, but I don't think I will keep the car past 5 yrs). From my standpoint, the valet service is a nice-to-have perk, but at the end of the day, not that important to me. Sure, having to drop off the car at the dealership for service requires planning and fitting it into your schedule, but not really that much of a burden. But just wondering if anyone has different opinion on it.

It COMPLETELY depends on the dealership you'd be having service the car. Some of them are total scumbags, some do a really good job. Perhaps call whichever dealer you intend to have do your services and see how they treat you.

My local dealer is pretty sketch, but they did a good job with my valet service. Though I won't be doing it ever again because they use garbage oil. They told me I'd have to pay for full synthetic, and I'd rather just do it myself if I'm already paying.

I only use the complementary service because is free and the car is a lease, if the car were mine I would be doing all maintenance work in a third party reputable mechanic shop using the best oil in the market and not the crappy regular oil my dealer use, but that just me.

I agree with Todd (above). I have two local dealers and one is high volume-low trust. Trying to move as many cars possible out the showroom door and also the service bay. The other convinced me they were right when I had a single issue that required a visit. Not super busy, time to talk with service staff, technician was Genesis trained, etc. Worth it to me to drive 15 miles farther for the comfort of confidence. If my only choice were #1 then I would feel better waiting in the reception area for repair since I would not want to be ten miles away when they call and say "You need extra service...."

I'd rather have $6500 in my pocket. The convenience factor varies for everyone though. Depends on where the dealer is, your normal schedule, etc. Being retired though makes it really easy to say that.

Thanks all for your really helpful input. The dealership near me is only 15 min away and seems like a quality outfit. They've actually been really helpful working with me and advising me on the pros and cons of buying used. For example, I actually thought that since I'm not the original owner, I wouldn't have any powertrain warranty but they were the ones to inform me that as a subsequent owner, powertrain components are still covered under the 5yr/60K mile limited warranty. Of course they want me to buy the 2020 G70 sitting on their lot, but they haven't been pressuring me at all. Since I've never owned a Genesis, I don't know what their service department is like, but the dealership as a whole has a "quality" vibe to it so I'm not too worried about it from that standpoint. Although it's a good point about the type of oil that the dealership would use. I didn't realize that full synthetic may not be included as part of the complimentary service. If I have to pay more for it, then that does diminish the value of the complimentary service somewhat.

You'll get mixing opinions from different members depending upon their dealers. Some dealers will use Full Synthetic, others don't and will charge you for the difference. In Miami, South Florida they will use whatever they have at that moment (even if the oil doesn't meet Genesis requirements) and you'll have to pay for getting something better or bring your own oil.

He doesn't need to know that you can't find one within 700 miles or that you don't want to go through the hassle. I bet you could negotiate down to mid-high 30's for the used car

Nah, I read correctly. I just assumed he isn't a close friend since he said "coworker." As such, the situation calls for negotiation (in my mind). Theoretically he could get a new 2019 around 43k, so you use that as a bargaining chip to get the used car for an even deeper discount. Turn that $6500 potential savings into $10k or more potential savings

Agree with negotiating, lowballing. What's this guy's alternative anyways? Sounds like he's pickled with the car UNLESS he gets rid of it for cheap and someone is willing to buy it. Once he has to leave, expect the price to drop big time as he isn't shipping the car with him hahaha. (full disclosure, did not read every reply so if he is sticking around for a year my mistake)

I would definitely negotiate a bit. Another thing to consider is does your coworker seem like someone who would take care of the car? Like, nothing crazy done to the car in the 5k miles he's had it. But I would leverage the loss of the complimentary service & warranty to lower the price a bit.

Thanks everyone for the advice. My coworker was willing to drop the price by $1K and to be honest I didn't want to push too hard or try and lowball. But as it turns out, my dealership gave me a really good deal on the new 2020 model so I am now the proud owner of a 2020 G70 3.3T AWD with Sport package! I've had the car for less than 12 hours but boy do I love it. I'm like a kid at Christmas - I plan on getting up early tomorrow and familiarize myself with all the features and controls
