If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Don't know where this post really belongs, so here goes

The R-Spec, even with snows, needs a snow mode on days like today when the roads are like grease, the drivers have left their brains at home, and feather-like manipulation of the gas pedal on this thing still triggers the traction control. Please! A simple button that starts the car in 2nd and retards spark or fuel. I'm beginning to question my choice of Dunlop Winter Sports 3D.

The good news: navigation routed me smartly away from all these accidents and got me to my destination even earlier than I would have expected, even on a clear day. Sorry the picture is blurry.

All that power! Have you tried using the manual mode? This enables you to start in 2nd gear (at least with the ZF tranny) for more traction. I had a 1994 Grand Prix GTP and the car had a little switch under the dash and when flipped, a green light on the dash would indicate (2nd gear start) which was pretty cool back for 1994.

I'm surprised to read that you struggled with this morning's snow. Granted, this is my fourth winter with a Genesis, but it handled the snow today with the same aplomb that I've become accustomed to (and I believe I'm driving in the same county -- Scott -- that you are much of the time). My only complaint about winter driving in this car is when the ESC chip decides to cut my power when I'm taking a left in front of oncoming cars (when it perceives a slippery roadway). Other than that, no issues whatsoever.

Have you tried forcing a start in 2nd gear via the pseudo-manual setting? Otherwise, your snow tires may be a factor. I've used Blizzaks for 12+ years and swear by them. Good luck.

I shouldn't complain, I guess, as much content as this car has. But Scott's right, the 2nd gear start was available a long time on quite a few cars. I should probably try the manual mode, but it's counter-intuitive because it is very slow to shift -- which we've heard a hundred time on this forum -- but also because it operates exactly the opposite of what I am used to (1.you push it away from you, and 2. the up-and-down directions are reversed).

I probably got a little sloppy (or lazy) with my last car being AWD with snows (Michelin X-Ice that aren't available in 19"). That car, I drove every day for three years from Prior Lake to Mankato (when I wasn't in a dealer loaner).

For reference, I made it from Belle Plaine to the Ridgedale area this morning in 45 minutes flat.

However, there's a silver lining to all this: the 5-Series liked hangin out at the dealer service department as much as it liked the snow AND . . . the power, the grunt, I love it, and I'm feeling better already!

Did your R-Spec come with summer performance or all-season tires? Time for 4 snows.

It has 4 snows (Dunlop Winter Sport 3D), which I had the dealer put on the day after I took delivery in November. I guess the question is, should I have bought Blizzaks, which I didn't like at all a few years ago on other cars. The car came with all-season Contis, which were so-so even in dry, moderate temps.

What Continental where provided?

Demand ContiExtreme DWS- very good tires

This tire is very poorly rated (see the Tire Rack review tab). I've driven on these a total of one day. Dealer stores them for their customers. We'll see when the weather changes.

I can agree with the poor ratings and reviews on Tirerack for these tires. They suck. Can't wait to burn them off and put on a different tire!

I just drive my "old" car. 2002 Acura TL with winter tires on snow days. Problem solved.

Follow Minnesotan.

Hmm. My experience is just the opposite. The Conti's are 1000 times better than the Dunflops, especially in the snow. If I had to pick a nit with them, it would be in rain: I get more ESC action there than in the Dunflops.
Returning to snow:
It's possible that my 8 20lb bags of cat litter in the trunk add to the good performance of the Conti's. I started doing that with the Gen, and it helped there too.

Two 70lb. tubes of sand went into the trunk yesterday. I really appreciate having the Genesis trunk liner!

Too bad the Michelin X-Ice are not available in your size. I run them on my E350 Blutec and find them very good in snow, slush, and even ice. My E puts down 400ft-lbs. of torque so starting in second is a must. I would think the same would be true for the Genesis/Equus.

Unfortunately in modern cars (due to weight), this doesn't really help, your car's curb weight is about 3900 lbs, with 46% in the rear it equates to about 1800 on the rear axle, you added 140, so less than a 10% addition... I keep tube of sand in the trunk, but it's in case I need traction more than anything.

I agree that the Conti's are much better than the Dunflops, but that isn't saying much:) Other tires that I've owned have been much quieter, smoother and stickier and less money, i.e. Hankook, Sumitomo, General.

You know... that's just brilliant. I've been spoiled with AWD for the last 10 years, so that thought didn't even cross my mind!

Thanks.

While it could be the tires, in some particularly slippery weather, it really doesn't matter what you are driving, or what tires you have, you are going to slip. You just have to prepare your vehicle the best you can and adapt to the conditions.
