warranty is not really 5yr/60k

i had assumed that the bumper to bumper warranty was 5 yr/60k miles, but after looking at the warranty book, i discovered:

3 yrs/36k miles for the radio, cd, nav and bluetooth !!!
3 yrs/36k for paint also.

i'm betting that if anything breaks early, it would be the electronics, so i am disappointed that the nav and audio system is only covered for 36k miles.

has anyone had malfunctions in this system after 36k miles?

that is some bs... something they neglect to tell you when you purchase the vehicle. they love to brag about the bumper to bumper being 5/60 and the 10/100 but they do not mention the 3/36 at anytime. i will ditch this car by then anyway but that is some nonsense.

umm, i just checked the websites of Lexus, BMW and Acura.
their basic warranties are 4 yrs/50k, and none of them exclude their paint, audio system, Nav, or bluetooth.

so, it is not common practice to exclude a major system like audio/Nav. i guess Hyundai doesn't have much faith in that system lasting longer than 3 yrs.

I was concerned about the electronics, so I asked and found out that the electronics were only covered 3yr/36k miles. Because of that same concern I purchased the extra coverage and got a bumper to bumper warranty with electronics included for 10yr/100k miles. The dealer (Rick Case near Cleveland) also extends the drive train warranty to 20yr/200k miles. I will be dead or have another car before then.

I was fully aware of the warranty on purchase and understood what was covered and what was not. Because of what I knew I chose to get a 10 year 100,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. I had one head unit crap out on me, and with the level of sophistication of the stereo in the Tech unit to me it was not worth it to have that happen again and possibly be not covered on an expensive repair. I think the parts-only replacement cost on it was like $2200.

If anyone didn't know what the particulars were on the warranty, you should have found out! I had a written copy of the warranty before I bought the car so I knew what I was getting into. Never expect the dealers to volunteer anything to you, especially the less than optimum details. I had a great dealer but still had to ask a lot of questions and get information before I committed. "Buyer beware" still applies.

This. How can the OP cry foul when it is common knowledge? Mentioned/discussed numerous times in this forum, right?
Btw, extended warranties can be purchased up until the original expires. If the OP is that concerned has he looked into that?

i have to say i have purchased a dozen or more new vehicle from a bunch of mfr's and i have never heard of or seen until now that "bumper to bumper" doesn't include any part of the audio system (speakers, wiring, head unit, etc.) that is a subpar job on hyundai's part no matter the argument, sorry, just how i feel.

common knowledge (at least i thought it was) headlamps, bulbs were 2yrs/24k brake pads/rotors 12/12 and after two years battery is prorated. but not the damn stereo?? having said that 3/36 is not bad, just not in the bumper to bumper (except audio system)...lame

btw, i was aware before i bought the car, just pointing out how "keen" they are to brag about the friggin warranty that doesn't cover a HUGE expense after 3/36.. poor job on hyundai's part, at least for their "premium cars" don't you think?

To answer the original question, if you have the Tech Package (included in newer 4.6's), and expect to keep your car for awhile, then I would seriously consider an extended warranty. There have been numerous problems reported with the Tech Package audio systems, and the solution is usually to replace the entire head unit or entire amp, etc. Out of warranty cost has been stated to be about $3K in such cases.

This was precisely why I bought the extended warranty, especially after seeing some reports of occasional glitches with the DIS in the tech package.

i'm not fuming mad, just a bit disappointed. it's no big deal. i've never kept a car longer than 40-50k miles, so i should be fine. on the other hand, if i continue to love the genesis and decide to keep it for several yrs, then i'll find out how much the extended warranty is.

in almost all cases, the cost of extended warranty is not worth it. i've never bought extended warranty on anything.

Did you originally get the Hyundai HPP Platinum Plan? I believe that those things are covered in that plan.

I got the HPP just to cover the Nav and other electronics. I told the dealer I wouldn't pay more than $200 for coverage that should have been part of Hyundai's warranty, and he agreed That was easy!
