If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

Hello all,

Happened to look in my spare tire compartment last night and found water pooling in the bottom, under the spare tire. Anyone else had any water intrusion issues in the trunk before. Also noticed that the passenger side taillight has condensation in it. Have not had any big rain here lately. All of the rubber grommets in the trunk are there and intact. Seals around trunk lid appear to be fine, not sure where it is coming from... Any ideas?

Thanks

The traditional method is for someone to get in the trunk with a light while another person mans the hose and floods the seams. Especially around the taillight too since it has condensation.

Check the bottom too. I've had water come in from road spray and rusted out bottom panel, wheel wells, etc. The worst was my '64 Karmann Ghia. Went through a heavy rainstorm on the PA Turnpike. When I hit the brakes, it was like a tidal wave as the water rushed up front.. I don't think a Genesis rusts as bad as the Ghia did though.

Four ways I can think of:
1. around the trunk opening. Since this it's made from steel you should be able to see the damage/seams not sealed with the trunk open and a slow flowing hose.

2. the lights. Again you could use a slow flowing hose to test around the housings to see if if water is making it's way inside at the bulb penetrations.

3. the roof/sunroof. Water can go almost anywhere from there.

4. from below. spray is getting up under the car and running down into the trunk from a penetration (possibly from a crash repair not 100% sealed back up). I would suspect this if the water in the tire well is dirty.

I would put my money on the sunroof drain becoming disconnected and flowing into the trunk. It is not too hard to check; It will be a clear hose running behind the paneling of the left (drivers) side trunk.

Copy all, I will check the sunroof drain, it that looks good will try the water hose method with my son in the trunk...will let you know what I find.

Thanks for the responses...

Check the foam seals behind the taillights. I have seen water come in around those on a couple models, Genesis included.

Copy, i will try to pull that taillight out this weekend and have a look.

Have genesis sedan 2013, same issue. Please share results of your investigation!

Sunroof drain issues are common enough on many cars that I'd be surprised if that isn't the cause, honestly. Definitely keep us updated on what you find!

Update: Rained pretty hard the other day, but no water in the trunk. I hand washed the car today and sprayed lots of water around the sunroof, trunk and taillight, but still not water in the trunk. I guess that is good, but will keep an eye on that area and look for water after raining, Taillight is pretty much dried out, so i did not pull it out..If I see water in there again, I will investigate a little deeper, too many projects right now..

Still no more water in the trunk, just checked it again last night. We have had some pretty good rain storms come through recently, including yesterday and still no more water in the trunk. I drove through some very heavy rain , with lots of standing water in the road, but trunk is dry.

Could someone help me? water somehow gets into the trunk in the middle. It flows down the right side of the bumper. maybe it could get in from the bumper?

Welcome to the site. Just an FYI, this is one of the Genesis Sedan threads. If you ask in the Genesis Coupe section of the site, you'll probably get some answers from people who know more about the Coupe. :)
Are your trunk seals intact? Tail light mounting bolts loose (may let water in around the taillight seals)? Does your car have a sunroof/moonroof? Just a couple ideas to start off with. Others on here will probably have better ideas than me...
