  • Hint: Use a descriptive title for your new message
If you're looking for help and want to draw people in who can assist you, use a descriptive subject title when posting your message. In other words, "I need help with my car" could be about anything and can easily be overlooked by people who can help. However, "I need help with my transmission" will draw interest from people who can help with a transmission specific issue. Be as descriptive as you can. Please also post in the appropriate forum. The "Lounge" is for introducing yourself. If you need help with your G70, please post in the G70 section - and so on... This message can be closed by clicking the X in the top right corner.

So I stopped into Target today to pick up a thank you card for a friend of ours. I came out to the car and was sitting in it filling out the card with my wife, kid, and kid's friend with the A/C running. All of the sudden, the car nudges to the right slightly. At first, nothing dawned on me until my wife noticed how close this Dodge Ram truck was to the drivers side of the car. I look in the mirror, and sure enough, I've been hit. Yes - he hit a parked car. I've had the car for 28 days. I guess this kind of thing happens, but to hit a parked car takes some real talent. The damage initially looked worse, but a lot of the paint rubbed off. The rear quarter panel just behind the left rear door is going to need some body work.

Here's my car, sitting perfectly in the lines of the stall...(and the truck who hit me to the left)

His damage (go figure)

Damage before buffing off his paint...

Damage after buffing off his paint...

Thinking about this positively, at least I was in the car when it happened. Could have very easily taken place when I wasn't there and the dude could have ran, causing my policy to take a claim against it.

I have had that happen to me two times on other cars I have owned over the years (not on my Genesis), but I was not so lucky to be in the car at the time, and the culprits did not stay around once they damaged my car. I carry a pretty high deductable, so it cost me some bucks.

I assume you shot him dead, right? ;)This is why I couldnt bring myself to buy a new one-too many people out there who don't give a crap about their own property, let alone someone elses.

To lesson the odds of stuff like that happening, I chose parking locations carefully, and don't mind getting some excercise when walking to/from my car.

Honestly, if it wasn't for my wife, the situation would have most likely escalated more than just an exchange of info. On one hand, I understand people make mistakes. But on the other hand, how can you hit a stationary object? Really. WTF?

Trucks are big, and it is hard to estimate exactly when you are going to hit something when turning on a tight diameter.

If you think that is bad, take a look at this:

Yes, the bottom line is NEVAH park in tight parking lots. These days there are so many huge SUVs and trucks to getcha, often driven by tiny soccer moms. Always park in the boondocks and get some exercise.

That may be the case but if the person driving the truck can't safely handle a larger vehicle, they shouldn't be driving it. Responsible people who know how to handle the size car they have chosen to drive shouldn't have to suffer due to those that can't.

Lastly, if the driver was unsure about the distance while parking, he should have parked somewhere else.

Sorry about the rant, but this has irked me since I had a (large) truck back into my last car which was parked; caving in the rear bumper. I too only had it a couple of weeks at that time.

BTW: The part in the video where the girl can't park is hilarious. :D

What did the driver of the truck say to you?

Still, I can see how something like this can happen. But there have been times when I was sitting in my car in a parking lot when the person in the car/SUV next to me opened their door and hit mine without even acknowledging that they'd done anything wrong.

To be honest, he was completely apologetic and helped smooth things over a bit.

As far as parking in the boon docks, there's a risk for everything. I've seen cars out there get broken into and also hit by cars that were traveling across the parking lot (taking short cuts, etc.) This is the first time something like this has happened in my 18+ years of driving. I always thought people would bang a door into my car, not hit it with their moving vehicle.

I don't park in the boon docks, but there are things one can do to reduce the odds of something bad happening. Sometimes just parking a little further can make a difference and decrease the odds of being hit (or being dented by a door opening). Parking next to a handicaped (rarely used) or curb (a car only on one side of you) can also reduce the odds.

Yeah, I parked and left the car running with my wife in the car while I ran in. I usually do get a corner spot.

On the topic of the pending repair, this is something they can do without replacing that portion of the quarter panel, correct? I know that silver is a b*tch to match, so I know that will be fun getting it right.

From your pics, the dents and scratches look fairly deep, so I don't know if they'll be able to get by without replacing sheet metal.

My last car, which was silver, got rear ended and had considerable damage to the sheet metal. After repair I could't tell anything had happened. Body shops are very good at computerized paint matching these days.

In any case, don't accept anything less than a perfect result.

Sounds like the guy need sto give up his truck and drive a Smart car or Fiat 500. Maybe he can handle that.

I don't buy those excuses as my Wife drives a full size Chevy truck that's lifted with big tires and can get into a small place liek that first time with no problems. If she can do it, I don't see why that guy couldn't do it.

I've had teh same happen to me on my last car. Had it 1 day and someone in the walmart parking lot decided to give me some pinstriping on the back quarter. About 2 weeks later, some dumb broad backs into teh wife and then tries to blame the wife because she was too busy yelling at her kids instead of looking where she was going. Somehow my Wife didn't go off on her. My Insurance fixed the car and then went after her. Good thing I have a good insurance company. They usually take good care of me, will fix anything, and then go after the other person if they are at fault. Easy on me and my peace of mind.

Good luck on getting the car fixed.

Ouch! Unfortunately, I have become a bit of an expert in paint & body repairs with my silver 4 month old Genesis. The rear quarter panel looks like a $400 job. The small chip in the door could range from nothing for a touch up to $300 to sand & repaint the area. Having silver paint adds a lot to the cost assuming it's done correctly.

A good buddy of mine does Lambo, Ferrari, Mercedes, etc., body repair and he told me that if they do the job correctly, they will most likely end up painting the majority of the rear driver's passenger door, half way up the pillar, to the tail light, and well into the bumper. We shall see.

Just received a phone call from the other guy's insurance adjuster. He took a recorded statement of me saying that my car was stationary with all 4 doors closed. LOL. I also stated that my car was well within the painted parking lines as well, and would be happy to show pictures.

I wasn't in the Genny this morn. I decided to take my SUV to the airport. I pulled up to the drop off spot. Hit the automatic tail gate opener. Mind you I picked a curb spot to let my son off that was fairly open. There wasn't a car in front of me or behind me. The time it took to close the tail gate a mini-van pulled in front of me. I get in the vehicle and before I can start the SUV, the minivan's rear lights come on and sure enough the guy backs right into me. He has to pass me to park against the curb and then instead of moving forward, backs up. I press the horn 4 times while trying to get started to move back but it was too late. "I forgot you were there" he said. Sheesh. Fortunately there were no scratch marks but apparently you can't even drive up to the airport anymore. I've practically given up close parking altogether at any venue. Even the valet guys can't be trusted to not open the doors or park your car too close to another vehicle and now just the time it takes to drop off a passenger is all it takes to get whacked. :/

The only Honda Accord I have ever owned used to attract dings and all kinds of scratches, no matter how close or how far I parked. I just couldn't believe what was about THAT car that attracted even errand carts at the supermarket parking lots.

I finally got rid of it after only one year, just couldn't stand it any more. Since then I have had one BMW and 3 Lexus without getting one single dent or scratch!

I have a F150 and would not try and park it in such a tight spot!
I always give myself lots of room because it's too big to judge in such a tight spot!

I wish this guy would have thought the same. His adjuster called and took a statement from me last week. I'm going to give him a call back tomorrow afternoon. Haven't heard anything since then.
